Coilovers

Postby robwils » Wed Mar 04, 2009 12:09 pm

Forgive what may be a daft question ?

Whats the advantage of fitting coilovers when the std bits start 'knocking' on the WR1 ??

:?

I guess it depends on what coilovers you are thinking of getting.

Hopefully whatever you choose will last longer than the standard STi struts.

Pros - should last longer / make the car stiffer and handle better / adjustable

Cons - Only 1yr warranty / Expensive / If height of car changed airbags might not go off during an accident

Personally I looked into this when my struts were knocking. It was around 600 notes to fit one replacement strut with a 3 year subaru warranty. AST Coilovers looked cheapest but have a reputation for leaking from what ive seen. TEIN looked a good all rounder and was my prefered choice although some on here said some TEIN setup cars didnt handle very well. I like the look of the gadget that you can get for inside the car so you can harden and soften the shocks on the fly without getting a out of the car. EX-TC are the daddy of coil overs but cost double the other brands but are supposed to be the dogs.

I have APEXI BC ones fitted same as standard ones when on fully soft.
Went brands hatch last week and the handling was spot on.

Eh !

Standard STI and WR1 are different heights !

So are we now saying because Prodrive have put 20mm lower springs on the WR1 that the airbags possibly won't go off ! :?

I was sad enough to read the handbook for the WR1 which said changing the height would effect the airbag zones and as such them going off. I assume they adjusted what ever sensors they were talking about for the wr1... It may have been talking about big changes i dont know - just remember the wife reading it and trying to persuade me not to massively lower the car because of it...
