Tyres again (again)

Postby Scutch » Mon Jan 05, 2009 4:02 pm

I'm in need of some new tyres, I think (cant be arsed to actually go out and check the tread, but I'm sure they'll be needing replaced soon).

Anyway, here's the lowdown :

* I dont do trackdays.
* I dont race around or act stupid.
* I dont go into corners late, scrabbling for grip.
* I do like to put my foot down now and again, legally.
* I do like to go into corners reassured that I'll get out safely and on the tyres I went in on.
* I travel to and from work every day (10 miles or so) and potter about at the weekends. Hardly big miles.

I currently have Pirelli PZero Nero's, but have been looking at the Yokohama Parada Spec 2 tyres, and also the Toyo T1-R's. Both are available for under £100 a corner at Camskill (local to me).
Are these decent enough? I know the Parada has been getting rave reviews online and from other folk, but they're apparently not too confident in the wet. Given that Cumbria seems to be the wet capital of England, I'm dubious.

Opinions?

Cheers guys 8)

The prada spec 2s are very good in the dry but do indeed slip a lot in the wet i find that the rear end becomes very nervous under hard accelleration in corners,
As for the toyo t1-rs ive always found them the best as theyre reinforced so you dont get any wearing on the outside of the tyre and they are brilliant in the wet the trouble is that i find they dont tend to last very long only got 6500 miles out of my last set
hope this helps
Sooty,
Needs a WR1 now his WRX300 is sold
Or a spec D

Thanks guys. Might neglect the Yoko's for the time being then.

Hmm. So many choices. I'm sure whatever I opt for will be spot on for what I want, but I want them to grip, if anything.

The T-1 S is worth consideration then. Similar to T1-R but brought out to be harder wearing ! Got 'em myself and I'm happy.

I would have thought that Goodyear Eagle F1s fully fit the criteria specified. Great in the wet and dry and for the type of driving you mention they will not let you down.

Hiya,
I use Toyo Proxies T1-R on the Focus ST as they have loads of grip in the dry which the car needs for its torque. They are also very cheap compared to the other tyres out there. The downside is despite being very grippy they dont last very long. Around 6000-8000 miles for a set of front tyres.... The WR1 doesnt have anything like the same torque so they will probably wear a bit longer if you are gentle with it. It may be worth trying the T1-S but that will no doubt compromise a bit of grip if its a harder wearing tyre.

With regards to how they are in the wet I found them worse than F1 Eagles and Continental Sport Contact 2's... but the grip in the dry was far better which is what i needed at the time.

Ive only replaced two tyres the week i got the car so far on the WR1 with like for like as finding good tyres is a fine art. You can transform the handling of the car with the right tyres but on the downside you can also turn it into a bloody nightmare if you get the wrong thing.

Im also interested to know what tyres people find good on the scooby.

I have the assimetric version of the F1s on mine and have found them better than the Pirelli neros.

Excellent in the wet which I would think is the most important for you up in Cumbria scutch and good in the dry if a little soft but I personally get a good 'feel' from them. The tyre walls are a bit soft too though but it sounds like that shouldn't be a problem for you.

Thanks guys. I had the Goodyears on both of my Clio Williams and they were tip top, its just that I havent really seen them being banded around in topic as much for the Impreza's (P1 or WR1) so was wary of how good they actually are at that size and on the Scoob.

The main suggestions tend to be the Parada, T1-R's or Nero or Rossi's.

Will look into the Goodyear F1's now 8)

I agree 100% with what Dougie said.

I guess driving style will come into it as well.

Cheers mate, but I'd already ordered the Eagle F1 Asymmetrics from Camskill. John there raved about them and said there was no better tyre for the size and ability at that price (£99 ea).

Getting them fitted on Saturday morning at Camskill, too.

Cheers guys :)

Is there really that much difference between winter and summer tyres, or is it all dependent on driving style?

There is no Tyre that can do everything well ! there is always a compromise with tyres ive found that all road tyres after a while of hard driving they will turn to jelly as they get hot and the solid tread on most road tyres can not cool down quick enough, (only in my opinion as i believe i drive to the extreme road and track) they may well be enough for ome others, road tyre's are good for general driving and when the weather is wet, cold etc. Ive found that the road legal track tyres dont suffer as much with getting to hot as they have very little tread more like a slick tyre with slit's in. These are excellent for hard road or track driving but the compromse is that they are noisy and tend to tramline but as i said there is no one tyre that can do all. (IMHO)

i have the parada spec 2 tyres on the now and they are very good in the dry but not a big difference from the pzero neros. but in the wet/greasy roads they do slip a bit. (either that or i am getting too cocky with my driving)
I have a set of pzero neros on the alloys i use in the summer and i have no complaints about them at all pretty good all round but are 130 quid each last time i bought them.
i used hankook ventus sports and toyo proxies t1r on my civic type-r and the toyos were good(once they were scrubbed) but the hankooks were 30quid cheaper and as good and lasted a bit longer but i dont know how they would fair on a wr1
