mine always starts a bit "lumpy" and "rough" when cold. i took the car to cross roads to have it looked at early last year, i cant remember there explanation but they said it was normal. my old sti used to sound and feel pants when started in the cold aswell.

cold weather kills batteries, i have had new battery and alternator recently so it doesnt start lazy, these cars do need to warm up before they run well. do you remember it being like this last winter?

Hiya,

I use Shell V Power all the time with mine as i notice a big drop in power if i use anything other than shell or BP Ultimate in it. My car is due its 30k service in just under 1,000 miles which is a load of oil changes. Might get them to do the plugs at the same time if it will help it.

Strange thing is its definately only when it is really cold. The temperature went up to around 6 degrees (by the time id got out of bed) the other day and it started and ticked over fine as normal. This morning I moved the car to let the missus get her car out and again it was stuttery and didnt feel "happy" starting...

Its hard to explain how it sounds especially if ive got to describe how a tired battery sounds. All I can say is it starts fine within 2-3 secs normally in warm weather. But when the temp seems to drop below 4 degrees it struggles and takes 7-8 secs of ticking over to fire up... then once fired up the rpm guage doesnt go up smoothly but jerkily. You cannot get any power out of the car to move it off the drive for at least 30 secs or so as it really struggles to go up the revs. Literally as soon as it has chugged over for a couple of mins it returns to normal. I dont understand why it does it in cold and not in the warm if something like the battery is knackered... surely that would struggle to put power out no matter what the temperature outside.

Well im glad im not the only one to have experienced it. Just wanted to see if its "normal" for a scoob. I am bearing in mind that the car is 5yrs old now and as such its never going to feel as smooth as a newer car with more modern technology.

Father in law hasnt had his RB320 out in the shite weather he normally drives an old discovery to stop the scoob / DB7 getting covered in grit etc. Might get him to check how his ticks over when cold although his is normally garaged so wont get as cold and covered in ice as mine which is left on the driveway... :?

It's been up to -10 up here averaging -5 during the day & mine fires up 1st turn of the key.
I did get a new battery a couple of months ago, the cold used to drain the old one.

Nothing to worry about in the slightest.

If your battery is not tip top it will struggle, don't forget your oil in these temps will be the consistency of Bro's man fat so it will turn over a bit slower until it catches and will quite possibly take a few more revolutions before it does so. People running 15/50 oil will notice it even more potentially.

Your Lambda sensor runs in open loop until it has sensed a certain temperature (i.e it needs the exhaust gas to warm it up a bit)...until then it runs default fuelling settings in your ECU. In these temps it takes a few more seconds to achieve that so it will run lumpily for a bit longer. You can also feel this in normal temps except it only lasts a few seconds.

Glad the scoob taking a while to fire up in the cold is "normal"... must admit this cold air seems to have given the car loads of power... wonder if i can re route my air conditioning to the air intake to increase performance on demand

I know I was winding you up ya tart!! :cuckoo:

As for potential... everythings got potential... you could actually turn up to a WR10C meet for example :lol1: ... or you could take that bag of spanners you keep hidden in the garage out for a spin sometime and show me what 400bhp feels like in a WR1.. 8)

Interesting to read on this one, I have been having the same issue since the cold weather kicked in. I have noticed now though that it has started to do it even when the car is warm....doesn't seem any pattern to it. Tends to do it more if it is turned over quite soon after being turned of. I have to pump the accelerator to get it to kick in. Any ideas, or is it normal.

Feel like a right prick when im on a busy car park!!

That doesn't sound right at all, you shouldn't touch the throttle when starting, something I read once, aparently something to do with the ecu needing to caliberate when starting. Have you had the plugs changes, might even be the pump, fuel filter etc

Is the car regualary serviced????

Right will try that. It is regularly serviced, only done four months (2k miles ago). Had new plugs & all filters done (30k service). Was thinkin of takin it back to the subaru dealer that serviced it but don't fancy the prospect of a huge bill!
