My oil temp and pressure are attached to the sandwhich plate, but I did'nt buy the defi's from the people I got the S/P from ! I may be mistaken but do not "defi" also do a S/P and do they not also recommend using it !...... Why if it's going to give a false reading ! Which inturn would not be good for the so called being the most accurate/best gauges you can buy ! I not saying your wrong Mark...more than likely your right But these so called companies that spend thousands on development, to be better than there rivals, but then develop something that does not do what it says on the tin

marky mark wrote:Oh well, sounds like they did a great job. wired up wrong and 2 out of the 3 sensors wrong.
The critical part (as far as oil temps are concerned) is at the big ends. Putting the temp sensor either in a sandwich plate or even worse the sump plug is not fantastic. they are exposed to the wind a little etc and measure the oil where its at its coolest.
In the main gallery you will measure pretty much what the crank/big ends see.
Think of it the same as putting your water temp sensor in the radiator. stupid idea. thats why the water temp sensor on a scoob is in the crossover pipe under the inlet manifold on the top of the engine - so it sees exactly what the engine is seeing temp wise.
Putting the boost sensor directly into the inlet manifold is fine.
Next time i'm passing you way can you refit mine As you know fitted myself, buy still have not tided up the sensor wires I pay you in beer.....few pints should do ain't that right Bro

Sorry Martin, Its well known - not to mention fairly obvious engineering principle - that it shoud measure at the place where the oil is hottest. The pump and filter area is next in the oil feed system from the sump. The sump is thin steel hanging out in the air a bit (deliberately to aid cooling) so its impossible to argue that measuring it there is correct. It wont be a million miles off for sure (it's unquantifiable) Measuring from the main gallery, where the oil is subject to heat soak through the cases etc, and closest to the pistons and crank - where the oil is actually doing a job - is the way to go. The oil in the sump/filter area is doing nothing lubrication wise, why would you want to measure it there? I dont know if Defi sell sandwich plates TBH. They are useful for fiting an oil cooler etc. And as i have said before any manufacturer will sell anything if there is enough people to buy. The adaptor to fit it into the gallery is 5 or 10 quid, a sandwich plate is a lot more. Without wishing to pi$$ on your fire or make me sound even more up myself than i actually am , I am heavily involved in the design of performance engines. This stuff is not subaru related, its just simple engineering practice.

Thinking about it even more, you may have noticed that you attach your sandwich plate directly to the modine. The modine provides oil cooling via the water system to which it is directly attached too, just downstream of the radiator in the loop. So the coolest water in the whole sytem is used to try and keep a curb on the oil temps, right at the point where you are measuring. Oil modine is shown in this pics of my engine. Its the bronze thing that the filter screws into with the pipes going across to the water pump.

Not being one to make you sound even more up your arse than you already are I take most seriously on what you have to say and believe your techy ability is way above mine and most on here But like most on here we do buy with out techy knowledge and questioning your superior techy knowledge, without doubt will prevent some poor unsuspecting ass like jp buying something in the future, that is not required So hope you dont mind me questioning you,and sometimes stating the obvious to make you explain things more so than we know !
