Need new pads

Postby Nick » Thu Apr 03, 2008 12:40 pm

I've just had my 35k service & my rear pads are 90% worn & the front pads 80% worn. My dealer has suggested that I can save money by getting EBC red pads instead of the Subaru pads.

My driving is fast B road & cost is not the main issue, if I want good brakes what does the forum recommend?

I would go for Ferrodo 2500's, Pagid, or performance friction before EBC's.

Performance Friction.

I have them on mine and they are fantastic. I would also recommend uprating the fluid and hoses at the same time. Only likely to add £80 to the bill and you will notice the difference.

Got Ferodo DS 2500's in ours, been superb, only down side is have a slight squeal when braking in reverse, nothing forward, just reverse as has a friend with an 04STI, but would reccomend over the originals

Thanks for the advice.

I'm thinking of going for AP brakes when my disk wear out. In the meantime, maybe Ferrodos over Performance Friction as PF seems to work best with pads+disks?

Ive got EBC yellow stuff pads which ive put just on the front at the moment - brakes improved loads over standard with just these. However im told from many sources that the pads are very hard and will knacker the discs so ive also got ebc discs waiting to be fitted to complement the new pads and increase braking even more.

Cheers

Hmm

These things squeal like mad on all low speed braking - forward & reverse. Is there any way to stop the squeals? They've been carefully broken-in for over 100 miles. Not too sure I like the "bite" or feel of them either. :(

Did you put plenty of copper grease on the backs of the pads?

When you say carefully broken in what do you mean? Gentle light braking?
A lot of performance pads recommend standing on the brakes from high speed (100+) a few times to bed them in. Thats what i did with mine & it works.

For breaking-in, I did lots of light gentle braking.....

I didn't fit the pads - they were fitted by the local Subaru main dealer.

I was told the same by Subaru that the car uses re-branded EBC Red Stuff pads. If you want to improve your brakes then get EBC Yellow Stuff pads as for not a lot more you get a harder wearing, sharper braking compound that doesnt take as long to warm up to get full use from. I did and think for the money they are great. I cant comment on anyone elses suggestions as ive only tried the default and the yellow stuff pads.

cheers

Just picking up on the fact that Subaru TOLD you that the std pads are in fact EBC RED STUFF..... OK, for guidance then, can someone explain why Ferrodo DS2500 would be any better as I planned to buy those when mine need changing.

Cheers guys.

Mick.

Just to confirm, my dealer did not say they were the same pads, but that they were cheaper.

After 150miles, I can say that the DS2500's are worse than Subaru Brembo pads. If they don't get any better after some more miles, I will be replacing them.

Hiya,

My local dealer said that the pads on the subaru as standard are equivalent to EBC Red stuff pads. Sorry for any confusion about that, they didnt say that they come with red stuff as standard. They said that EBC Red Stuff is pretty much exactly the same as the default pad that they fit but is cheaper so to look at putting those on if you were going to do a like for like swap. I chose to go with Yellow Stuff as these are classed as an upgrade pad to red stuff.

Ive used various pads mentioned above on other cars and theyve done the job fine so its up to you which you go with mate.

Hope this helps clarify things

Can't understand that bud i noticed a big differance over the standard pads when i changed them.
Everyone would not be recommending them if this wasn't the case.

Try as i said bedding them in properly by doing some heavy braking from speed before giving up on them.

If you've been braking lightly to bed in and perhaps glazed pads, may be worth checking with Alyn as to what bedding in procedure you can now follow.

The blasted lads squeal like hell. I checked with the fitter & they didn't use copper grease, but some kind of spray. Any idea what the spray would have been? I'm about ready to trash the pads. :(

Nick get the pads out & coat the back of them in a good layer of copper grease this should cure the problem. Never heard of using a spray before ALWAYS use copper grease. Also did they swap the anti squeal plates over when fitting the new pads?

If fitted properly you should not be getting the noise you are, maybe just a wee noise braking in reverse but thats pretty much it.
