Rev Limiter

Postby jrf567 » Tue Nov 09, 2010 9:56 pm

Just got a WR1 and am trying to find out how the Rev Limiter works. Have had a fiddle but still not convinced I got it right.
Any views or signposts for me?

Turn it off ;-)

If I remember correctly, you have the key in the ignition, but not have the enginer running, then you can twiddle the nob below the rev counter to adjust it to where you want it set, press the nob, then you have an option to make it beep when you hit that setting or just have the light on...

Some STi's didn't have too much of a rev limiter. Mine sure didn't (with a few burned out sensors as result :? ).

If you meant the little bird that tells you when to change gear though... Read the manual!

From memory... with second ignition on.... I think you have to either push and hold or twist one of the "black sticks" below the rev counter and hold it there for a few seconds and then it goes into the adjustment mode. You can then alter the beep on/off and also the revs at which is comes on i.e. 63=6300 rpm etc

once you've pressed the button in to select the revs, you can then twist it again to either 'on' or 'off' (or similar, not sure if it actually says on an off...)

This does not alter the rev limiter - only the gear change indicator light/beeper.

Rev limit is 7600 rpm.

Changing at 6300 means you are missing out on peak power - I would be taking to above 7k for sure.

Doesn't the peak power depend on the power curve for your particular car? Mine, according to the rolling road graph (for whatever reason) was at 6300...

just use your own ass dyno and see at what revs you start to drop off at....then set the light/beep accordingly.

Unusually low that for a 2.0 - did the graph dip just after that then slightly recover?

It just tailed off slowly.

Peak bhp for WR1 was supposed to be at 5800rpm, or so it stated in the book.

I did make a MSExcel spreadsheet thing once that you could feed your figures from a dyno in to, and it worked out where each gear change would leave you in the rev range and therefore you could find out where is the best place to change gear... I could find it on old comp' and post it if anyones interested.

I turned out for my wr1 the ideal gear change was at 7600 as you'd expect.

Agree with the above. I always changed at 7500 or higher. Just keep it nailed. As long as there is no pistin shooting out of the wheelarche, you're OK.

I had once owned a '93 RS2000 escort (first car) that I found out (after buying it) had had a full engine rebuild due to the 'cam shooting through the bonnet'...

...still love that car.
