Nurburgring 2009 trip 6th-9th August

Postby danr55 » Tue Mar 10, 2009 11:53 am

Right then everyone! Time to get this trip sorted.

I would suggest a leaving date of Thursday 7th August, by ferry to Calais. From memory a return ferry for 1 car is around £60.

Then staying here - www.burgstube.com highly recommended with good accomodation very close to the Ring, also good food and beer. Staying Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night, and leaving on Sunday for a return ferry.

Accommodation is approximately 37 Euros per night per person. We need to confirm numbers for this sooner rather than later, and pay a deposit.

Ring open as follows:

Thursday 5:15pm -7:30pm
Saturday 11am-7:30pm
Sunday 11am-7:30pm

This should give everyone plenty of flexibility on when they want to go out for a few laps.

Social events TBC, but will involve mostly beer :D

Now, who's coming?

This would most certainly be an excellent event and one to not miss out on, however the first thing that comes to my mind and probably will do for others is cost.

Quick check on Google maps, say 1,250 miles round trip for me

This alone is just about £300 in fuel, also how much is it to drive on the ring?

I'm no Swede, so next thing comes to mind is track insurance just in case, any ideas how much this will cost?

Also what about normal insurance, I'm guessing most insurance companies will insurance within Europe free of charge for a certain period.

And finally any tips/courses for training prior to this?

If the cost works out reasonable, I might just put my name down as I know it's a once in a lifetime opportunity well for me at least

I think the Ring works out around £10/10 Euros per lap - ish. bare in mind when we have been before we have bought a ticket for 4 laps, and that has been enough, it's a very long way round, as we're there for a couple of days, you might want to do this say on 2 days, so buget perhaps for up to £100 for laps on the Ring.

The Ring is actually a public/toll road so check with your insurance whether you are insured to drive there, otherwise:

look into track insurance, likely not be to be cheap.
Just drive within your limits - this will be more than enough fun!

Your normal insurance should cover you to drive in Europe

Final tips? if you have a playstation or xbox get a racing game with the nordschleife circuit on, play it a lot. it wont be 100% accurate in terms of the elevation changes, but at least it will give you a little bit of a clue as to how some of the corners go, but be aware it will be different when you get there, and learning the track takes a long time. You dont need to know the track to have fun though

Hope this helps. Ask anyone who has been on one of our trips before, and they will confirm it is a fantastic experience

At this stage yes, unless you find a trackday either side of these dates you want to organise as an optional "bolt on" for people?

Public/toll road, wasn't aware of that. Not quite sure how I would verify that with my insurance :?

It's just for reassurance, that in the unlikely event someone crashes into me or I happen to cause a crash involving others, I'll be covered.

What have you lot done in the past?

Who's your insurer? I have never had insurance for the Ring before. I will probably get it this time as I get a good deal with my current insurance company

Please dont ring your insurer to ask them whether you are covered - they will say no and once they have said no that is it.

Check the policy document though and if it doesnt say you are not covered - you are.

Yep it is worth getting a quote from Keith Michaels, I used to be with them before I sold the WR1, they did me track cover for £75 a day which was extremely good, I got covered for Spa and the Ring last year 8)

I think you might find this helpfull:

http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/

With regards to insurance its like a minefield, Kieth Michaels will only insure you if you have an existing policy £60 per day with £2000 excess.
I have a company that Gary Moulson suggested:

Hmmm... Can't find one straight away.

Unfortunatly no.

I will be going with the local scooby club "South East Scoobies"

In May/June. The more I read about the Ring the more nervous I am getting, and I am also having trouble justifying the costs as I am currently out of work the building industry here in the south east is crap.
My WR1 is my pride and joy all I keep hearing about is horror stories.
Is it worth the RISK? Is it as bad as people make out? are there that many accidents??

There's regularly accidents. If you drive within your limits you will have tons of fun and there's no need to crash!

There are crashes everyday, if there is a bad one or a fatality the police are involved as "the ring" is a public road !

You have to look out for the barry sheene brigade as most of them are fast on the straight and all over the place on the corners. Y

You have to go there is no place like it, even if you do the 4 lap and drive steadily.... 2nd lap you want to go faster for sure  unlike me who done 1 warm up and and broke down

I've checked and this means way over 100db static as it's measured from 30m, so this is a possibility if people fancy it. Could be awesome actually, supposed to be a great track!!
