I was in 3rd for the mountain (spinning over the crest) and held in 3rd right into the wooded section. I tried changing to 4th but it didnt feel right or offer any advantage in time (in fact the opposite).

Thanks for the compliments - power has been upped today so all prepared and ready for Knockhill ... bring it on :D

Thought so. Spot on  Good luck and let us know how you get on :thumb:

Agreed! I did want to dip to 2nd briefly then back up and do the 90R in 3rd to see what the torque would do but we ran out of time - plus it's your car mate - not something I would like to take liberties with. I really liked being in the passenger slot though - you have less nerves than me entering the track and your racecraft is also really good.

Fab day all round

Were you keeping it in 5th for Coppice?

I was braking down to about 110mph for that one.

Had to go to 6th then back down again, but we were starting to get fuel surge then so backed off from that point. I don't know what speed I was doing as the speedometer was too high up

its quite interesting looking at the gears you use around cadwell.

On a bike thats geared to top out in 6th the back straight, you get 6th down the start finish straight for a second before snicking back to 5th and throwing it into coppice.

Did anyone get any lap times? I assume you don't use the mickey mouse chicane just after Mansfield in a car?

Welcome by the way Dynamix!

I didn't do any lap times, Mark, and you're right - it was on the full circuit going through Hall Bends etc. Dynamix may have more info on gears/times though

I know you were on the full circuit Fraser, i was just wondering if the cars use the chicane after mansfield (the downhill left hander after the gooseneck) or you just have a straight run from Mansfield to the bottom of the mountain.

Ah! I see! No, we didn't use the chicane - just a straight run to the mountain.

My walk though of a lap:

3rd through Hall Bends down to 2nd for the hairpin
short shift to 3rd for Barn then up 4th then 5th for the straight. braked down to 110 for Coppice and powered through keeping weight on the rear to stop it stepping out.

Changed to 4th then into Charlies 1 staying wide and straightening up and dabbing brakes and turning for apex of Charlies 2 to bring the front in better. (The cone was in the wrong place here)

Into 5th on Park straight and held power on over the crest braking just before surface change and down to 3rd for Park. (again the cone was in the wrong place here)

Short shift to 4th (no braking) for Chris Curve and accelerate through this and headed for the brown tarmac (hitting 100) and then on brakes and down to 3rd for Gooseneck. Over the apex of the first part and a really early apex for part 2 and basically head for the field  but just keeping it on track.

Into 4th down the hill before standing on the brakes, into 3rd and trailbraking right to the apex of Mansfield, then applying the power to stop the back coming round. Keeping right to cut across the curve, into 4th and head straight at the turn point for The Mountain.

Change down into 3rd and hug first apex and start applying power just after the apex and throw it into second part still on the power avoiding getting too close to the pesky cone things on the apex :) Up over the hill in 3rd and hold up past the restaurant.

Someone timed a few of my laps in the afternoon and they were mid 1min 40's with varying levels of traffic. I am guessing your bike times would be way less than that :D

IIRC my best time (supersport 600) was a 1min 33.9 secs at the 1998 BSB round. This was before the chicane was added so the same track as you. There was a lot less run off at Charlies and Barn then

BSB Lap record is a 1 min 27 sec something

Gears on a bike -

6th gear on start finish (just), down to 5th for Coppice, 4th or 3rd (depending on gearing set up) for Charlies, top along Park straight, down 4 into 2nd for Park. 3rd and then 4th just before Chris curve. 2nd for gooseneck, up 1 and then back down to second as you go down hill.
3rd/4th/5th along bottom straight back down to 3rd for bottom of mountain. Over the top airborne and then you have a choice of either revving it out and not dropping back a gear for Hall bends or short shifting to 4th and then knocking it down. Back to 2nd for the hairpin then 3rd on the run to Barn before going down the start straight again.

Right now the next event is at Bruntingthorpe on Sunday 29th July(seperate threads under the events section).

Although this might not look like much, it is an absolute highlight on the calendar. There are two principal reasons for this. The first is that because we attend as a club the costs are very low indeed (in fact, neglible). The second is that you have the continual opportunity to take passengers around the track, each of whom must contribute to charity, whilst experiencing the best you have to offer. You can imagine the giggles :D . They have the thrills more than you but the best part is making them laugh as you go round. That, for me, is worth every best lap I've ever done.

TBH, the outright best part for me is to take disabled children round the track during the time allotted. I'm the first to queue up for that and the experience is immensely rewarding. It's great to see them fighting off their parents as they fawn over them whilst you hustle through the gears only to find their faces full of glee. The parents tend to be either ashen-faced or asking for another go.

I know this is not a typical track event and there will be more proper ones, no doubt, but this is an ideal opportunity to do some track work and some socialising at the same time. Bear in mind that the track is not always stonechip-free and if you want to go be quick! There's already a very large contingent.

whiteline ARB's would flatten it off in the corners for sure.

Have you had your geometry set up? I have found that makes the biggest difference in handling for very little money. Certainly the best VFM mod I have done handling wise.

yep prodrive springs on standard suspension. actually the car handled just fine other than that one corner but i did like to come over that crest rather quick and stand on the brakes before it and chuck it a bit sideways LOL

ask Fraser (houdini) he drove it and said it handled really well, and boy can he drive

doesnt feel like it needs geometry doing, having owned an Evo I'm sure it's set up well at the moment!!

maybe i'll try the whiteline kit next

Thanks for the kind words, Dan. Actually I'm crap - I just can't see over the steering wheel and just guess when to turn, so I never have any fear :bsflag:

Truth be told - thank you very much for letting me drive your car. Considering that I only intended to be a passenger for the day it was a real treat to get behind the wheel, and both Easytrack and yourself really made my day :thumb: :woohoo:

ALSO.....

Hi Duncan! A very warm welcome indeed, and good luck for Knockhill. That used to be my old stomping ground and still a favourite track of mine. Your car looked extremely well prepped and looked very good handling through the esses. I spent a fair amount of time watching you go round and had a quick question - Were you in 3rd gear for the mountain or 2nd? Also, your line through the esses looked very similar to mine. Were you holding that at max revs in 3rd or had you changed to 4th?

Cheers!
