New Owner

Postby HMR81 » Mon Aug 12, 2013 9:56 am

Hi all, WR1 newbie but not new to scoobies. Just picked up mine on Saturday. it goes back on thursday! i bought it requiring some work...wait for it... the trim hasnt been well looked after and the paint needs some TLC but i plan to restore her to her former glory over the next year or so(do these projects ever finish? nah.)
the car goes back because of some mechanical faults, which under warranty will be fixed FOC to me(thank god for buying from a garage)
heres the list of mechanical faults...
the biggy is that on anything past about 45 degree's of lock there a really loud knock which feels like a slip, i suspect either the drive shafts(although not convinced because its fine in a straight line) or the track rod ends
the DCCD flicks to errors(green O flashing on dash) after about a mile so cant alter it.
not sure the ABS is working correctly
a grinding noise when going form 5th to 6th

can anyone think of ANYTHING mechanical i should ask them to look at as this warranty is only for a month!!

Thanks in advance.

Rear shockers......rear shockers and while your at it get them to look at the rear shockers!
Is your DCCD set to Auto or manual? In manual turning corners you get a clunking noise comes from the diff and if not carefull you can damage it so be carefull. Make sure it's in Auto and leave it there until you can read up on it (do a search on here there are loads of threads covering it) and make more use of the manual settings when the bad weather comes along.
Hope you get your problems sorted out and enjoy your new purchase!

Thanks pal. the noise sounds like is the front to me but will be getting them to check the shocks. Ive left it in auto mode(the DCCD sorry) because i havent a clue what settings are what yet but it starts erroring after about half a mile so will get that checked as well. ive got a full list of stuff for tehm to fix including the gearbox grinding from 5th to 6th. Like ive said, she needs some work! lol.

You may have a worn clutch. Subaru gearboxes are pretty bomb proof. Did you test drive before buying?

i did test drive it yes but i knew about the warranty before i bought it and only agreed to the sale if all mechanical issues got cleared up. I think its the syncro too, clutch feels fine and certainly isnt slipping.

It goes back on thursday to get all fixed so ill be handing them a list of things to check and won't be accepting it back until they have done them all.

the list at the moment is...
DCCD not working
track rod end
Front Drive shaft check(im not convinced its the track rod end, could be hub too though)
rear shocks
5th>6th
ABS is either not working or its crap because i locked them up easily
key fob doesnt work after the car has been standing for ten mins(battery on way out i think)

As you can see they have some work to do, once i get it back im paying for it to go to scooby and get checked over to make sure she is right before the warranty expires.

If you can take it to autotecnica for a check over, they aren't that far from you and are great blokes

Welcome to the club buddy. Syncro was replaced in mine also @ about 30k or so. Seem's to be a fairly consistent issue. Hope you get it fixed soon and have no issues with the warranty. Is it standard or any mods?

Im in Sandyford, just outside Tunstall. It is an expensive list ill admit(and yes i did get it cheap) but its all mechanical and i have in writing that they will fix anything mechanical so let the games begin! im taking her back tomorrow with my list and will see what happens i guess. Solicitor on standby lol, but im sure it wont come to that.

It is totally standard by the way, no mods

update...
got the car back, and basically they failed on the diff. they did fix a few other issues though. So i agreed with them i would take it to holdcroft scooby and they would go over the car with and provide me with a list of jobs that require doing. Scooby were great and gave me a list of everything which i gave to the garage, they are collecting the car again and have vowed to fix every issue on the list from subaru.
Once i get her back(two weeks i reckon) i will be taking it back to subaru to do the same and make sure they have done what they said they have done. Long story short im not giving up on these bas****s and they will get it fixed lol. they do have the rebuild the diff and the transfer box so its a big job for that but the rest are minor fixes that i could do myself but why should i!
And then the process of restoring her to factory condition can begin, subaru are going to go over the car again for me and let me know what bits of trim im missing and what i want to replace due to not being well looked after, its going to be long and not cheap but i will have this car restored to perfection...eventually.

it is stressful i must admit, but i WANT the car and i want it to be perfect. i know thats probably a pipe dream lol but ive got to try! and im in no rush so if it takes me 2 or 3 years it will be worth it in the end and the value will only go up as less of them are on the roads, so im trying to look at it as an investment
