284 New Owner (Long time reader, first time poster)

Postby Knobby » Wed Feb 08, 2012 9:41 am

Hello all,

I have owned 284 for six months, first oppurtunity I have had to register and post, my apologies. Thought I would update on my experience so far, looking forward to being an active forum member. I have been a member of other forums and this is the best I have seen by far, with lots of good advice and people seem to know what they are talking about.

After owning relatively fast cars the WR1 has been my first 4 wheel drive, first turbo, first saloon, first jap car and my fastest car.

History:

Saxo VTS (Brilliant if a little flimsy)
e46 330 Clubsport (First of the new shape, now the wifes car, 123K Miles and no major component failures, excellent piece of engineering)
2009 Elise R (Unlike anything else for the money, an experience to own for a year but not a long term car IMHO)
WR1 284 (jury still out, may be the best all rounder I have owned)

Future:

Would like a last shape M5, looking very cheap now at 15/16K for a high miler and I have had excellent experience with BMWs.

Car is completely standard less a touchscreen kenwood head unit and upgraded speakers, both of which have made a real difference. Also looks better than the grey standard unit which just didnt fit in with the interior. No plans to upgrade anything, want to try and keep it standard and keep mileage low.

Car had its first service and MOT last week, no advisories and no work needed, garage said it was the best maintained car they had ever seen of its age. I used Sparshatts here in Hampshire, expensive but I found the service good. I would have liked to use a specialist like Autotechnica, but didnt have the time or inclination to drive somewhere else or waste a weekend. May do it in the future for the bigger service.

Real credit to the last owner in Wales who really looked after the car, it had been over serviced, 85000 miles worth of servicing, with only 56000 miles run, although this is complicated by the 5000/six months servicing regime.

Negatives: Slight whine from one of the belts on startup as the revs rise to run the electrics, goes after 5 seconds and not evident at any other time. If I think it is a problem I will post in the tech section. Also I have slightly damaged the face of one of the wheels and some of the coating is starting to peel on the others. Considering refurbing the wheels but will probably wait till after the winter. Hard car to park without kerbing as the wheels stand relatively proud of the tires.

I will try and get some pictures up soon.

Havent seen another WR1 on the road yet, think there may be another close by.

Happy to hear opinions and say hello. I have the old stadard head unit and speakers for sale if anyone is interested, again will post in the correct section when I have time.
Regards

welcome to the club! Not sure how long keeping it standard will last, it's tricky!

I have been tempted, If I am keep the car long term I would definitely be spending some money. At the moment I keep falling in and out of love with the 1, I respect it tremendously, but for some reason dont love it. I think it can lack that "charm" that some cars have. I still miss some of the cars I have owned in the past, including the Saxo! Priorities would be:

Wheel Refurb
Nur Spec R
Coilovers
Splitter

My current thoughts are that we might be in a position to move to a one car family soon, either giving me the oppurtunity to restore/build a car or buy something sensible to replace both cars.

Future Options:

Restore a Mk1 Escort Mexico to rally spec.
Build a westfield/cobra type kit.
Get a last shape 5 Series.

None of these are likely to happen short term and there is also a small chance that I will be emigrating to the US, in which case a big V8 would be tempting!
