STi in Finland

Postby The Swede » Sun Jun 05, 2005 6:43 pm

Hi,

I'm not really a WR1 owner unfortunately. The WR1 came a few months after I got my wife's STi :( And since her car is on lease until next summer ...

Anyway, I'm a Belgian, married to a Finn and lived in the UK for 7 years. (I'm still officially based in UK)

Left last year for wintery Finland but hope to be back in the UK end of this year.

Otherwise, I'm an active member of the subaru-impreza.org forum and got a bit of a history in the automotive world. As a student, I've worked a few years as car journalist for a rally magazine in Belgium and Holland and I've been doing some work as test driver for a German car manufacturer.

AND... I still hope that Subaru Finance will accept to take my STi back before term and give me a lease for a WR1 ! 8)

Why should I stick to the STi ? WR1 a bit of a problem child ?

Reasons I'd like to swap for a WR1:

1. My wife HATES her STi: it's WRC-blue, has gold alloys and the typical blue interior. All the ingredients for the youngsters of the town to think she's Mrs Tommi Makinen...

2. The WR1 has DCCD. I would hope this would react a bit faster than the passive difflocks of the 2003 STi. They lock a fraction too late (i.e. when the car is already sideways), which is no real issue on tarmac, but on snow and ice, it makes the car handle like a pig. And when you know we got 6 months of real winter here... :tumble:

3. Hey... the thing not only looks the part, but has 60bhp more on the tap ! :notwor:

4. Fuel "economy" can't get worse than mine. With some luck, we average 10mpg...

5. There's 5 STi's in the whole country and of course there has to be another one exactly in this town. So if I wanna have the fastest car in town...

1. Put the wife in her place ;) (in the kitchen) WRBlue is the best colour.

2. The 05 STI has the same DCCD.

3. Prodrive "claim" 60bhp more but in reality it isn't. Look on here at rolling road results for clarification.

4. Forget fuel economy

5. I can't argue against that.

Jaycee,

1. The LAST place I want my wife is in the kitchen ! (I know of a few other places she's could stay  )

2. True !

3. I DO understand why you're the black sheep of the site.

4. :thumb:

5. When you live in a town where people HATE foreigners (especially if they drive flash cars on top of that) AND police watches your every step because you had the highest recorded speeding offence ever in the country (and got off the hook because they forgot to film/take a picture as evidence ), there is no better :2: than to go and drive the fastest car in town.

First time I came to Finland. My then girlfriend told me I wanted to drive North along the Finnish coast as Finnish police was not very keen and had old cars whereas the Swedes are very tough and have proper Volvo's. True, but she forgot to say there is more police in Finland between 8am and 4pm than in all other countries in the world together !

Got caught just outside her home town doing 145mph instead of 60. At that time I still had the "philosophy" that if you had foreign numberplates, as long as they didn't catch you, you were safe... Did I know they'd set up a road block ! :brick:

So I met my father-in-law when he came to pick me up at the police station... imagine "Hi, I'm your daughter's new boyfriend !"

The good thing. In their rush, police forgot they either needed two men in the policecar chasing me (and recording my speed), either a picture or film as evidence. So when the thing came to court, we asked to see evidence that I was indeed doing 145. (I admitted to 85). :2:

Got done for 120 GBP ! :woohoo:

You can imagine their face when I then came to live here 5 years later with a road going 4WD rocket ! :toofunny:

Long story cut short.....

I sold Chris's scooby something on Scoobynet and during our conversation he told me about this place. I came to have a look, found you were all much friendlier than "other " Subaru sites and I've stayed ever since.
I very nearly got a WR1 when they were launched but I couldn't dig the colour hence my WRBlue STI.

Agree, although the gang on subaru-impreza.org is very friendly and helpfull too.

I think the silvery colour of the WR1 would be a blessing. Would get my lady of my back. I need a plot on how to get the thing back to Subaru Finance without breaking the bank.

PS: How much bhp does a WR1 then have ?

WR1 is supposed to have 315bhp but you won't find any on here with that. Not standard ones anyway ;)

Had mine on the Midland Scoobies RR day, equipment used Dyno Dynamics Dynamometer date 7th May, I am told that this is the most accurate equipemt available and there are only a handful of them in the country. WRC use the same, so the 18th should be good.

I got 310 bhp and 297 torque, they notices a small mis-fire and asked if the service was due, answer yes, they told me to get the plugs changed, they told me that if this was done they felt it would make Prodrives claims.

Not got too much mechanical knowledge, so I will see what the 18th brings as I hope to have it serviced before this date.

Bit early for plugs?

Best of luck though.
