also - why do you test the paint level with that positester thing?
surely if its thick or thin paint your going to use the same stuff to wash / wax /polish / finish it??
maybe it tells you were not to use hard clay?

We dont have ramps in this current unit but we will more than likely incorporate some into the new place.
We measure the paint to A) determine whether there has been any previous paintwork carried out and B) to let us see if there are any dangerously thin areas that may prevent us polishing as aggressively as we may like on some occasions.
Point B kind of answers the other question you ask. We use many different products for different types of car and paint types. If we have a car with thin paint then we cant always polish it with the same polish that we could use on a car with thick paint. I've lost count the amount of times the Paint Gauges have saved us from potentially striking through the clear coat on a car.
Just to add - it makes no difference to the paint removal rate when using clay. Whether it's aggressive or mild clay, you wont remove any paint at all - just the contaminants sitting proud of it
