Pics of my WR1 after partial Claying

The pics dont do it justice, claying leaves the car feeling like glass and unbelievably shiny. Hope to get the whole car clayed next weekend if the weather is okay.. :)

Nice pics mate! :thumb:

Is claying the same thing as using some plastacin? It takes all the roughness off the edge of the car and makes it nice and smooth.

Yer the front splitter does look nice dont know if its best to go black or colour coded...

Yes its like putty in your hands but some how as if by magic it takes off welded on flies and tar marks that tar remover cant get rid of... it also leaves a really smooth and shiny finish much better than polish... just dont understand how something like clay can make such a difference?!?

down side is my kit cost £25 notes from halfords and says it will do two cars...

It was a Meguiars kit from Halfords

Probably much cheaper to get it on ebay...

Oh the cloth you get in the pack is really good for getting polish off - far easier than all the elbow grease i normally use...

I've used that clay before and found it to be very good.

Claying a car is one of the biggest differences you can make to the paintwork, if your car hasn't been clayed then it's a waste of time waxing/polishing etc in my opinion as the contaminants on the paint will limit the final results massively.


You get different grades of clay, ranging from mild to aggressive. The clay itself is basically just a carrier containing tiny abrasives. The idea is that the clay glides over the paintwork when sprayed with lube and then shears off any contaminants sitting proud of the surface - such as tree sap, metal filings, small tar spots etc.

If your car has a large amount of tar on the paint then its worthwhile using a decent tar remover before claying as this will more than half your total claying time 8)

Many thanks for the tip Clark - can you advise on the claying / cleaning products you use and recommend for the WR1 as I know different products work differently on various car paints.

I know ive tried several polishes on the Focus and some bring it up really well being a deep metalic blue paint where as other products bring up the flatter colours better in my experience. The problem is it can be costly trying different products as theyre not cheap and also ya dont want to risk damaging the paint etc..

Meguiars Quick Clay is a good one for starting out, especially if you haven't clayed before. It will remove most contaminants without marring your paintwork.

As for protecting the paintwork on the WR1, Werkstat Acrylic is my choice due to the insane flake in the paint.

Ive got another question :)..

I take it Claying is something you wouldnt want to do regularly if its effectively sanding down your paintwork slightly. I jet wash my car weekly and use the purple meguiars NXT and normally polish it every 2-3 months. How often do you recommend claying / polishing a car that is used daily?

Dont want to find the car turning white in a couple of years from claying it too regularly :lol:

One would assume any response would dependant on miles covered, car storage and your attention to detail requirement.

I use Zymol wax and find after building up a few coats very little sticks to the car. I have only ever found the need to clay my WR1 once and I did that more for the experience. I will certainly be doing it again in the future but if the car is protected well then the need for claying is reduced in my opinion. Touch your car and see how it feels. Your finger tips will give you the answer.

Now for Clark to blow me out the water :wink:

You should only really see the need to give your car a full clay every 6 months or so as a rough guide. If you place a piece of plastic (such as the clear wrapper from a cigarette packet etc) between your paint and fingers then slowly move it over the paint you will soon feel if you need to clay or not, the paint should be as smooth as glass.

You wont remove paint from your car when claying (other than removing overspray etc) so dont worry about it in that sense but you really should avoid polishing your car so often. The likes of a WR1 (and the majority of STI's) has some pretty low paint readings in some places and it wouldnt take alot of effort to actually go through the clear coat even by hand polishing (the clear coat on most cars is thinner than a hair on your arm!) This is why you should only see the need to polish your car once every 6-12 months whether by hand or machine (and even at that it should only be a light polish if you've been washing and drying the car correctly) - the rest of the time should just be keeping wax or sealant protection topped up in between correct wash and dry sessions (2 bucket wash, lambswool mitt etc).


You may be unlucky at times and find that your car gets covered in tar from roadworks or it may get covered in tree sap for example, but a decent tar and glue remover will solve this and save you having to clay the whole car again :)

Great advice as it follows my theory... keep the protection (wax etc) topped up and the polishing isn't required very often.

We tried Zaino a few months back as they approached us asking if we'd be interested in being "official" Zaino Detailers, but in all honesty we couldnt see any difference between Zaino and the likes of Raceglaze 55. We used it on a metalic blue car and the flake didnt pop anything like what i expected. Needless to say we've stuck with Werkstat as it's quicker and easier to use and gives just as good (if not better) results. That's not to say Zaino isnt a good product as it clearly has its fans and it would appear to be the "in thing" on the likes of detailing world at the moment. However, it will be somthing else in the next month or two no doubt! 8)

You shouldnt top a wax with a sealant as there will more than likely be bonding issues, however you could do it the other way round. Sealant and then wax :)

Personally i very rarely bother mixing the two unless working with Blackfire Wet Diamond Paint Sealant and the Midnight Sun Wax as these have been designed to work with each other (the wax containing sealant properties).

Try some of my Zaino Z8 mate, in my opinion it is one of the best products I have ever used.
I wasn't sure about using it on top of Raceglaze 55 but I am so glad I did. 8)
Off Your Marks recently used it on an RS4 over Zymol Royale so it cant be that bad :wink:
