Waxed

Postby Gazman2054 » Mon Jan 15, 2007 10:23 am

I must say big thanks to Sandy first for getting me a tub of Zymol while in the states.
Also to Stu for getting me onto Zymol in the first place.
Thanks guys
I washed the car and dryed her down on sunday.
Then got my HD clenser to her to get the dead paint and old polish off.
She then had her first coat of concours wax.
Well what can i say apart from WOW!!!
She never looked this good before.
I dont think she was this shiny even when we picked her up for the first time :?
It took a lot longer than i thought though so no pics yet as it was pitch black when i finished.
I have my camera with me at work so i will take a couple of pics at dinner.
So long as it dont rain...

Believe it or not, the finish will improve when you add a few more coats of wax.... and when you wax it with sunlight available.

NOOOO !!!!!

Two reasons:

1. You want the wax to dry in a controlled way, not fry it onto the body. he bodywork ideally is a bit warm (>+18C) so the wax bonds well.
You should not let the wax dry completely before buffing up. You do so after 30-45 seconds while it's still greasy. As you buff up, you actually open the wax properly and make it bond to the paint.
If the paint is too hot, the oils evaporate straight away and the only thing you do is buff away the carriers from those few patches where you actually have wax on the panel.

2. You apply this wax by hand (your hand makes it melt and actually turns the paste into wax). I have ONCE had the brilliant idea of wanting to put a bit of wax on a panel of my (black) Merc after it had been 'warming up' in the sun in summer in Southern France... I spend the next 15 mins with my hands in a bucket of cold water :brick:

What you should do, is put the car in the sun afterwards to let the wax cure well and then buff it up again after 3-4 hours. This will avoid that the body feels 'greasy' afterwards.

Warning: When you do so, make sure the car isn't in a dusty place. The last thing you want is to buff up your just-waxed baby when there is dust on the panels... If there is dust on, nick your wife's duster to get it off first.

I think Stu was on about the post with the guy waxing the MC12.
Found it and watched it now.
Saw this on fifth gear a couple of years ago but it was nice to watch it again.
