Invisible Touch Detailing: BMW M3 CSL - pic heavy

Postby InvisibleTouchDetailing » Sun Oct 18, 2009 4:21 pm

Hi,

This w'end i had Dan's M3 CSL booked in for a Stage 1 paint correction detail. He arrived promptly around 7 am on Friday morning. The below pictures were the car upon delivery

and the engine bay

Image

Image

the car was jetwashed down and the wheels were sprayed and left to dwell in Bilberry wheel cleaner

Image

the door shuts, fuel cap and arches were sprayed in Meguiars APC and left to dwell

Image

Image

Image

the car then had a prewash snowfoam which was left to dwell for 5 mins to loosen the dirt. It was then jetwashed down along with wheels, door shuts, fuel cap and arches. It was then washed using the 2 bucket method with Meguiars shampoo plus and jetwashed down.

the car was then clayed with Gloss it mild clay and Meguiars Last Touch as lube. surprisingly very little contamination came off with only the lower body half being worst off. Hopefully this is a credit to your car maintenance Dan :)

Image

the wheels were then sprayed in Bilberry again and all parts were agitated with brushes

Image

it was then washed again using the 2 bucket method

Image

Image

and then dried using Meguirs Last Touch as a drying aid, which left us with this

Image

Image

Image

it was now time for a snack :)

Image

the car was then taken into the garage

Image

it was then cleansed with a paint cleaner which left this, not bad

Image

Image

Image

so lets get the halogen lights on and inspect the paint..

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

the M3 was then taped up ready for machine polishing. Now this was a stage 1 correction booking so the idea was not to remove all defects, but i would say 85-90% at least were removed. I used a Makita rotary with a selection of 3M polishing pads and Meguiars polishing pads where more bite was needed. For the polish Menzerna 106FA was used. This has enough cut if worked correctly but can also finish down to an LSP finish.

Image

Image

Image

Image

not the best of angles but here was a 50/50 of the drivers side rear arch being corrected, defects remaining clearly visible on the pillar

Image

i worked my way around the boot and then the passenger side

Image

Image

at this point it was getting late, so one last pic as the garage was shut

Image

Saturday brought a new day, and these guys were already waiting for breakfast :)

Image

moving round to the drivers front wing

Image

to this

Image

and this

Image

to this

a quick shot of the passenger rear wing after correction

Image

Image

now onto the bonnet. The front of the car had clearly seen some paintwork, which in fairness had been done quite well, although the bonnet did have quite a 'flat' appearance to it. This pic doesnt show it too well, but the right hand edge of the bonnet is corrected, which brought the metallic flake out much more

Image

Then the drivers side of the bonnet leading up to the first crease, this pic shows it more clearly

Image

and the rest of the bonnet after machine polishing

Image

The car was then brought outside and dusted down using Meguiars Last Touch

Image

Image

Image

Image

The whole car was then wiped down with Menzerna Top Inspection

Image

Dodo Juice Lime Prime Lite glaze and pre-wax cleanser was then applied and buffed off

Image

For a wax i chose to use Collinite 476s. This wax can create a very good finish but was primarily used as winter is fast approaching and it will create a very hard wearing protective barrier from the elements. 2 applications were applied leaving a good curing time between each

Image

which left this

Image

The wheels were treated with PoorBoys wheel sealant

Image

and the tyres with 2 coats of Meguiars Endurance tyre gel

Image

which left this

Image

Another day was now complete, time for bed.

Sunday came and a cold morning it was, frost everywhere.

As always these guys were eating :)

Image

and so were the pheasants :)

Image

these guys were waiting for breaky

Image

and the amount of noise these chaps were making they were definetly waiting for theirs :)

Image

Anyway, the M3 was rolled out the garage. The sun being so low was really bringing the metallic flake out now :) On with this mornings task, the engine bay.

It was rinsed down with hot water and Meguiars APC was sprayed and left to dwell

Image

Image

It was then aggitated with a selection of brushes, hot water and shampoo plus and more Meguiars APC. Then finally rinsed down.

Aerospace 303 was then sprayed onto all rubbers and plastics and left to soak for 5 mins before being wiped down

Image

which left this, much better than the delivery photos previously :)

Image

Image

Image

Next up was a lovely product, Zaino Z8 Grand Finale which was lightly sprayed onto a panel at a time, worked in and buffed off

Image

The exhaust tips were treated with Meguiars All Metal Polish

Image

Door seal rubbers and any exterior plastic was treated with AutoGlym Bumper Care

Image

The interior was hoovered and dusted with fine brushes

Image

Image

So, finally some finished pictures...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

And finally the Invisible Touch Detailing service book which contained a record of all work carried out, was prepared to give to Dan on arrival

Thankyou for looking, Christian :)

Thanks again mate, can't tell you how happy I am with the result. Car looks fantastic, way better than I've ever seen it even when I collected it upon purchase.

Got so much attention on the drive home, more than I've ever had since owning this car!

Anyone thinking about a detail, go and see Christian!

thanks for the kind words Dan :D was a pleasure to work on your car. Any queries regarding top ups and maintenance feel free to give me a shout.

One thing i thought of as well that would make a big difference to your cars appearance is painting the calipers and hubs. Doesnt need to be a lairy colour, if you wanted it to remain subtle and stock looking, black would look perfect. Just a thought :)

wow a truly amazing job that you did there mate well done.

If you get your car detailed is it normal to fill in chips and take out small dents etc or is it just cleaning with lots of products?

Hi Megaman,

Totally depends what the car is booked in for, repairing stone chips can most certainly be part of a detailers job if required. But, i would say generally fixing dents would not be

I know this is a pikey question to ask but I'm interested to know how much this service would cost to get these results?

I looked on your website at stage 1 £250+ (depending on time) but is this realistic based on your experience or does it depend on extras requested and people get carried away and it ends up at 800?

Yer maybe we can get a group discount :)

PS does the detailing service cover and sort of rust treatment?

£250 ish would be a level I could afford but if it's £250 to get you through the door and then you start bumping the price up to 400...500+ that's when it starts (for me personally) to become unaffordable.

I would like to get the rust spots sorted around my windscreen where they must have replaced it in the past!!

Rust around the windscreen sounds like a bitach of a job. I'd speak to Adam as I would have thought the screen needs to come out to do this properly. Adam (Autotecnica) is very good at paint and often does complete resprays. After sorting the rust I'd then be looking to getting it booked in for the paint correction...

You could got for the paint correction, this is the serious bit of the job, and then apply the protection yourself.

I'll speak to Adam about the rust then when I go there for the oil change. I think the whole roof will need to be done to blend it in properly... hey WTF do I know...?! Then, as you say, take it for a stage 1 paint correction....

Group discounts already eh :)

Ive worked my pricing out in what i believe to be the fairest possible way. A stage 1 paint correction based around 8 hours of work is charged at £250 and will include the following:

Paint Correction Stage 1
This service is as the ‘Protection Detail’ but also for those requiring an outstanding, fresh vibrant finish to their paintwork. A single stage machine polish will vastly reduce holograms, light scratches and swirl marks. Whether your vehicle is new or used, this premium detail package will produce exceptional results.

2 bucket wash using 100% sheepskin mitts including all door/boot shuts
All parts of the wheels cleaned with ‘acid free’ cleansers
Wheels arches cleaned and protected
Paintwork is clayed to remove bonded environmental contaminents
2 bucket wash again using 100% sheepskin mitts
Vehicle is hand dried with plush microfiber towels
Paintwork corrected by machine to reduce holograms, light scratches, swirl marks and revitalise faded oxidised paint
Prewax cleanser / glaze applied by hand to ensure paintwork is free from polishing oils and further enhance the vibrant ‘wet look’
Premium carnauba wax or premium paint sealant applied by hand to protect paintwork (multilayers available if required)
Sealant applied to wheels to protect from brake dust
Windows polished inside and out
Interior hoovered and dusted
Any interior/exterior metalwork polished
Any interior/exterior rubbers/plastics protected
Tyres dressed and protected

Now its impossibly to charge the same amount for a stage 1 on a mini as it is on a 5 series, equally 2 cars exactly the same could be in totally different condition. Several questions are asked at the time of booking to enable me to quote as accuretly as possible. I spent 2.5 days on Dan's car, but also bare in mind i also took around 160 pictures, 110 of which can be seen in this thread.
I dont have anyone working with me, the business is managed by myself and i do all the work myself, i prefer it that way to ensure the quality of work which leaves me.
If a car is booked in for a stage 1 and takes 10 hours, i charge an additional £35 for each hour over the standard 8. As im sure you can imagine if the work is being done at a client site and not mine, i will simply stay until the work is complete rather than re-travel another day. If i know the work is likely to take at least another half day, i will add £100 to the original stage 1 price charge. This is the difference of a half day charge between the £250 for 8 hours and £450 for 16 hours.

Dan's car had a lot of time spent on it, i simply had the luxury of taking my time, taking lots of photos etc. Not every job will have 160 odd photos taken and this does add to the time of a detail. Every now and then this is done to add a new car to the portfolio, especially as i knew the WR1 forum wanted to see examples of my work. Realistically the car could have been completed quicker, i dont expect Dan to pay for the extra time i chose to put in, and the end result would also have been no different if it had of been done without as many photos.

This CSL was priced at £390. This was based on £250 for a stage 1 booking, £100 for a second half day work, £25 for the engine bay and £15 for the Zaino Z8 application.

Considering Dan left with a car that looked probably better than when it rolled off the showroom and the ease he will have of maintaining this finish over the next year, let alone the extra attention he gained on the way home :), i believe this is very good value for money.

Totally agree its worth doing, I dont doubt the car will be very easy maintain for some time to come, which for me is great, as after a wash, and a dry I'm normally bored and want to do something else.

The car even looks better in the flesh that in the pictures, and for a car that has drawn very little attention since I bought it, the last few days have really been something else in terms of people looking at it.

If it keeps the car is A1 condition, and you keep it topped up and you eventually get an extra 1 or 2 hundred quid when you sell it, isnt it worth it anyway?

Cant recommend Christian highly enough, the pics speak for themselves but he is a real perfectionist with his work :thumb:
