Saloon only I think, not quite as sports set up as the M5 though, but Big, comfy and fast.
FYI, S6 indeed has same base engine as Gallardo, just with capacity upped to 5.2 liter (from 5.0) and made more civilised.
As all 3 generations of S6's, it does come in Avant too, which generally represents the majority of the sales.
It's indeed less powerful and fast in a straight line than the M5 ('only' has 435bhp vs 507), but actually drives much nicer. Beemer is a heap of metal that goes fast in a straight line but is too heavy and not homogenous on small, bendy roads. M5 also struggles with too weak brakes and a DISASTER of a gearbox (too juddery in Auto and too slow in Manual).
I'd go for an S6 any time over an M5.

Those are both very different animals.
The S6 feels much heavier and drives much more like an 'executive' car whereas the RS4 really is nimble and drives like a compact sports saloon.
For long distances and using for family travel, I'd go for the S6 any time. If it's for local driving and replacing the Subaru, I'd go for an RS4.
But as always, you need to try them.
Only thing I'd do is look at an S8 instead of an S6 if you do not go for a new car.
The S8 is not heavier than the S6 (due to the aluminium structure) and the S8 has an air suspension which makes the car feel very light footed. Plus, prices for an S8 are not really so much higher than for an S6 in second hand and the spec is REALLY impressive...

Drove the S8 last week.
Really worth a look. It feels very light-footed and behaves as two cars in one: a super comfortable car at normal speeds (completely silent, although the suspension could be a tad more soft, especially when you do like me and you get your fat @rse out of an S-class) and a beast that can compete with the RS4 once you push it !
