Just to bring this up to date:

Well, what a two weeks for the car.

170 miles of track at Brands then a turbo change forced by the lambda sensor coming off into the exhaust wheel then off the germany.

Over in germany it did around 550 miles on track and never missed a beat, not one hose popped off, not one drop of oil used and only about 100 ml of water.

I changed back to the Z rated PF pads for the trip as the ring isnt that hard on brakes once you know the track as you can carry speed through corners without braking.

This trip was the first I had done in the current set up. Last time over I had approximately 150bhp less than I do now. Quite a difference ! As a result, the speeds that I was arriving at corners was massively altered and I had to re-learn braking points and gears.

As an example I hit 130mph (gps speed) on the run to flugplatz, 148mph down to Schwedenkreuz and around 135mph down the foxhole. All of these were way over what had been achieved before. New lines were therefore required to be able to cope with these and smooth it. I also opened it up down the dottinger hohe straight and managed in excess of 160mph top speed very quickly before I backed off to cool it down before the exit :D I would love to do the full straight as I reckon 190+ would be possible.

Unfortunately there weren't many laps without some kind of roadworks so unfortunately i never got a full lap on it but still took 15 seconds off my best time from last time without trying. There is another 30 seconds or so to go IMO using the full width of the road.

Best recorded time this trip was 8min 31 with the roadworks and traffic that compromised lines. Sector analysis showed 8min 24 was what it should have been without these. Not bad for still just less than 100 laps of the track and a distinct lack of drama all the way around proving that there is way more to be had. I would rather creep up to the limit rather than take massive leaps over the limit after recent oulton park experience. (the last time that I had driven it on track)

Review of the components:

Engine - The engine was as strong as ever and still recorded 6 bar oil pressure after 3 laps on the bounce with oil and water temps in check. I never had to lift the bonnet all week. Just what the doctor ordered and exactly as specced with Area 52.

Charge Temps - with ambient temps at 27C the highest I ever got on the Charge Temps was 42C right at the top of the 2.4km uphill flat out section. Very pleasing.

Power - I ran baby boost on the saturday and sunday (on road tyres) with the traffic from a busy weekend as I didnt see the point of stressing it too much. This was at 1.5bar flat with ocassional peak of 1.7 bar up the hill once into 6th. I upped this to 2.2 bar peak and 1.8 bar flat for the rest of the week and needed all of this to stay ahead of the viper up the hill :D

I just let him past to get this shot into the Karussel:

Image

Suspension - was raised slightly for this trip to allow a bit of clearance into the Karussel... good job I think (the suspension geometry was reset to cope with this and post crash damage):

Brakes - I got a very small amount of fade of the z pads from 3 laps on the bounce but this was down to excess heat (i had stolen the ducting from the brakes for the oil cooler and air filter) but they never failed to slow me down enough and soon recovered on the next straight (if there is one there  ).

Pipework - even at high boost, the Murray Corp constant tension clamps held everything in place firmly and never popped one off.

Tyres - RE070 on the sat and sunday were as great as ever, these are awesome tyres and I think perfect for the nordshleife. 888's from Monday onwards got a little hot but seemed to plateau even with the laps on the bounce once I had dropped the pressures down enough to give headroom in the pressures. They ran to 33 hot psi in the end and this gave an immense amount of grip all the way around. Wear isnt too bad either from the miles done - I was surprised as I wasn't expecting to like them so much.

Fuel Surge - I finished one hot lap with the fuel gauge at below empty having got 5 laps to the tank. Problem solved for good and no issue with leaning out due to excessive fuel temperatures in the engine bay either. I will be fitting a fuel cooler at some point though to assist.

Aero - Rear wing was set relatively flat with a 10 degree angle to the main element. This was a good compromise between top end speed and down force for the 125mph+ corners up from bergwerk and 110 mph flugplatz & schwedenkreuz. Front splitter was also working well as I had to find a solution to the front assembly popping out from under the headlights from the force. Leading edge tape seemed to do the job nicely.

Mapping - I backed of the map a little on the timing side to allow a choice of fuels when over there and remove the need to take any octane booster. The DH 98 ron was fine but the Aral 100 Ultimate was perfect and never lit the knock sensor up at all. As such the map was not altered in any way while we were there. Flat shifting (which I absolutely love) was used to full effect and never caused any issues.

Summary : A great test of the car which it passed with flying colours. Love it 8)

Graph:

449 bhp at the wheel:
489 bhp flywheel
483.8 lb/ft

Image

Please note that this is not a finished map, there is more to be done on it to smooth out the dip in torque at 4500 caused by the avcr dropping approx 0.2 bar of boost just at that point. With better boost control it would have made over 500 lb/ft there.

Unfortunately we ran out of time last time waiting for it to cool down sufficiently between runs and trying to stop it flying out o the rollers again !! :o

Had this on the dyno again yesterday to see whether map changes had made the difference.

It was a dyno dynamics dyno this time so difficult to compare with the dastek at Zen but nice to see that it produced 489.7 bhp and 490+ lb/ft there too.

Again, this was on unboosted fuel.

I also took the opportunity to pick up some BioEthanol from the local Morrisons at 107p a litre ....not bad for 109 octane fuel I thought. Filled a couple of Jerry Cans up for luck.

I tried an initial run on this on the dyno but it was not mixing properly so would range from being lean to rich but running this at a 10% mix for starters to act as an octane booster.

Will be going to a 20-30% mix this week as that is about all I can get away with on the injector sizes I have it at present with the extra fuel that is required for BioEthanol.

I believe it will take a lot more timing with this fuel than std pump fuel.

All prepped and ready for the final round of Time Attack tomorrow...

Running E85 is fun 8) 8) although only on a mix of it at the moment, it is incredible stuff.

Dyno graphs shows:

Image

Lower figures were from the day after the 490 bhp dyno runs. It has gained 32whp and 41 lb/ft at the wheels :D :D so should show around 530 bhp 8)

Have made some changes to the bodywork too but will give the car a clean and post up pics later :D

Woop wooop

Awesome day at Snetterton for the final round of TA. I managed to qualify for my first final and then proceed to take another 0.5 seconds off that for the final to come in 11th even though I only did one hot lap.

Perfect weekend.

I will write a proper report, drinking myself silly is first priority :D

Keep up the work Dunk. Always a good read. Wish we(I) could add more useful comments but I think it pays to leave this thread to your progress which is far more fun to follow.

A report ...

I was optimistic about this event as it is a track that I know well and convinced that most others were underestimating how difficult it is thinking it is two big straights connected by 4 corners but having had the luck on TA rounds that I have had so far, I was very nervous.

Sunday morning and a brief distraction watching the farce that is F1 and we were on our way through the depths of Norfolk and fenland fog to the track. The visibility at the track was very poor and the start delayed by an hour. It was the plan for Nige to come out for the first warmup session with me but this was cancelled and instead a rush to get 30 cars out to follow a safety car out. I needed to get out on track to cure some nerves so sent Matt to run for Nige whilst I joined the queue of cars waiting to go out. If I didnt do this I wouldnt have got out in the first session. Unfortunately Nige turned up just after I had left.. sorry mate.

Image

A tad foggy !

Image

This seemed to help clear the fog and we appeared to be back on schedule for the day.

Nige was setting up the camera:

Image

First practice was about to start and the nerves kicked in again... the pressure was on as people expected me to do well as it was my home circuit. I wasnt worried about the track or the car but didnt want to let Rachel, Annabelle, Nige and Lou down.

I was out in Group B because previous results hadnt been good, but it allowed Zen Performance to fully support me during my sessions holding out pitboards and effectively telling me how to run the session ie do one warm up - 1 hot lap then come in, we will check and adjust tyre pressures. It was awesome, and so reassuring to have someone with detailed knowledge and experience setting your car up on event. I was calm and focused. The first session went well with me posting 4th fastest in my group with a time of 1.20.2 which was 2 seconds faster than I had ever driven Snetterton. I knew it would go quicker though as I had messed that lap up.

Image

The next session was qualifying. This is what would make or break the day for me.

From looking at the times of the two combined groups. I thought a sub 1.20 would be enough to get to the final from how people were going. This was my target and I thought I could do it.

Rolling out of the pit lane and into my warm up lap and then pull really wide for the final chicane to give a straight line and max exit speed for the opening straight - this one would do it. The lap felt great but as I came across the line to finish it my lap timer said 1.20.08 bugger. Cool down, re-focus and start again the next lap. This was clean again but 1.20.05 bugger again. Time to come into the pits and chat to Paul (Zen).

Paul (with able assistance from Steven Darley) sorted tyre pressures and checked stuff over whilst I sat in the car and sent me back out for one more hot lap. Nice wide line to the chicane and nail it up the straight, slightly later on the brakes and turn in for richies, that felt good. Into the main straight and into 6th gear now through the esses, bombhole and coram and brake heavy down to the chicane taking all of the kerb and a bit more :D and through to finish the lap. Yes - 1.19.6 result. That would do it !!

Image

I cooled down for a lap. There wasn't much left of the 20 min session so I headed into the pits. Paul made some adjustments to the suspension settings, checked under the bonnet and changed tyre pressures. He told me I had qualified already but thought that these would be an improvement. I had enough time for another hot lap. The car felt great and I headed round coram much faster than before and as a result I missed my braking point for the chicane - balls. Heyho, laughing to myself and shaking my head I cruised up to the line for the chequered flag and was almost crying to myself to know that I had qualified for my first final. I qualified 15th O/A and 13th in F/I

I was quite happy :D :D

Image

Everyone was chuffed for me too and it was great to have so much positivity around me.

Image

Still happy.

Time for the final and I needed to put more fuel in :o Unfortunately I overfilled it so could have run lighter but that is no excuse.

The car had been getting too hot in the qualifying session so was going to have to play it sensible in the final by making space to start with to make the first lap count. I warmed the tyres up and went for it. Unfortunately my GPS lap timer decided that this was the time to not show me a time. It felt good but how good?? I came into the pits to find out... 1.19.2 !!

I headed out again convinced I could go quicker still but on a hot lap the car decided to det quite heavily so I decided to back off and abort the lap let it cool down for a couple of laps then try again.... it did the same. Hmm. into the pits and Paul suggested doing 3 cool down laps to see whether it would clear it but alas not. I only got the one hot lap in the final but chuffed that it counted well finishing 13th O/A and 11th F/I and I got to drive home in one piece afterwards :D

Image

As for my support - I owe huge debt of gratitude to Paul & Liz and the rest of the guys at Zen Performance for this result, with their car not running it would have been very easy for them not to turn up but they decided to head over to support me and Steven anyway - for this I am very grateful. Also big thanks go out to Mark at Lateral Performance and from everyone else for the words of encouragement and assistance.

Here's to 2009 !

The changes to the bodywork you mentioned but didn't say was it no bonnet scoop & a rear diffuser or rear bumper extensions? Noticed something hanging down of the rear bumper in one of the pics in the time attack thread.

The scoop (or lack of) was the main one. The rear extensions have been there a while to try and help the diffuser work - not sure they do much tbh though and they are being replaced for next year with something 'proper' :D

Naked !

For the first time in god knows how long, I hardly recognise it.

Time to get the repairs done and bodywork changes to enable some fatter wheels and tyres and a few modifications for next year's project :)
