Postby dynamix » Sat Jan 05, 2008 1:00 pm

Okay now that the TA entry is in I can progress at full speed to get this up and running before the first event at Donnington. 91 days to go !!

I have decided to bite the bullet and up the ante for this year :D

The to do list is pretty huge but to summarise:

Power:
- Engine (being built)
- Turbo (ordered)
- FMIC (ordered)
- GT Spec Gen II Headers (ordered)
- Baffled Sump (to be decided on)
- Mapping
- Clutch (ordered)

Handling:
- Whiteline camber bolts (ordered)
- Track Focused Alignment
- change wheel bearings

Brakes:
- Fluid change
- Fit cold air ducting
- General checkover

Interior:
- Seats (ordered)
- Rails (ordered)
- Firewall & fittings (ordered)

Tyres:
- Toyo R888 to be ordered

Exterior:
- Aero work

Power targets are around 450+ bhp & 500 lb/ft so it should be quick enough to compete if I am :D

Engine is a 2.5 EJ257 Semi Closed Deck Block with top hat liners to enable it to withstand well over 500 lb/ft torque.

Pistons are Wiseco forged
Rods are Pauter
Crank is custom STI forged
ARC race shells
ARP head studs
Heads will be machined to accept O rings

All this will give the engine the ability to run 650 ish bhp should I want to at a future date but for now it will be limited by the size of the turbo to keep it driveable on the road as well as track.

Turbo - FP Green with 8cm Turbine housing and 3 inch inlet

Cooled through an APS DR725 front mount.

Clutch isnt finally decided but will be shortly.

The dates for Time Attack are:

R1 April 5/6th Donington Park Circuit – International Styling and Tuning Show
R2 May 17/18th Knockhill Circuit, Scotland
R3 June 1st Silverstone Circuit – Japanese Tuning Show
R4 July 5th Oulton Park Circuit
R5 August 10th Brands Hatch Circuit – AUTOTUNER Show
R6 October 12th Snetterton Circuit

I have entered the whole series this year so if any of you guys want to come along and watch ....

No - not robbed a bank, but I am being supported by Area52AutoSport ( www.area52autosport.com ) for the series this year and getting a lot of help from them in the engine, tuning and fitment side of things to help me be as competitive as possible.

Area 52 are currently ScoobyMania but are in the process of rebranding as part of a widening out of their market beyond just subaru tuning where they are the longest established tuner in the UK and possibly europe, to cover Evo's, Nobles and other marques.

I am thankful of their support in this high profile series and look forward to a great season ahead and as usual I will be documenting as much of it as possible. (good and bad)

The crank I presume you mean?

The STi one is forged as std but the one that is going in my engine is custom drilled to allow for better oil distribution.

Almost every 'track/race' car has an extending front splitter to counteract the inherant lift properties generated by the shape of the vehicle. Those that dont feature a venturi effect front to speed the airflow underneath. There is a reason for this :thumb:

In real life testing, admittedly not by me, but on my exact model of car, the following was recorded:

Red arrows represent lift/downforce at air flow of 144km/h
Blue arrows represent lift/downforce at air flow of 200km/h
Image

This shows the downforce on the car at speed compared to an evo. It demonstrates that the car is engineered to go light at the front with speed and thus create more understeer as this is acknowledged as being the safest for normal use. It also shows that the rear spoiler/roof spoiler/improved under floor panelling and diffuser on the 2006 STi are actually functional items.

The front splitter design will utilise well known (apparently ;) ) Bernoulli equation:

Image

To create a positive pressure at the front and, through the fitting of a protruding lip splitter, downwards on the lip. The ideal from research seems to be a protrusion of 3 inches to create a sizeable amount of downforce. I will be creating a degree of adjustability within the mounting points so that I can vary the amount of lip and therefore the amount of downforce so as not to upset the balance of the car. Hopefully this can be tuned at each circuit to suit the characteristics on the tracks.

Coupling this with a lower front of the car (it will be dropped by about 12mm) and a flat(er) undertray to speed the air under the engine bay (pressure drops with velocity), this will create additional suction onto the road.

The ideal will be to take Craners flat ;) :D

The material/construction is currently open for debate but favourites at the moment are marine grade plywood or a composite ally/abs plate

Carbon Fibre Rear Bulkhead

Postby dynamix » Sat Jan 12, 2008 5:09 pm

Now that the carbon sheeting has arrived, time to make a bulkhead behind the rear seats.

Although this wont be fully fire tight as there are numerous other holes fittings that would need to be removed such as the rear selt mechanisms (what are staying for the moment) it will help reduce some of the noise of having an open boot at events and besides which it will looked darned sexy :D ... well if I do it right it will :?

First off:

Take some big sheeting. For this I got a 2 sqm sheet from our boys at CarbonMods.co.uk - great service and pricing again !

Image

Then, remove the rear seats and make a template for the offending area from the cardboard box that the sheets came in:

Image

Image

Template made, now for cutting.... gulp

First little tricky bit done :D

No incidents so far ....

Image

Full outline done and first test fit...

Image

A bit more faffing around and trying to figure out a way to mark the holes for existing threaded holes to save drilling the car and here is the finished result:

Well chuffed :D

small update...

Whiteline Camber Bolts fitted this morning. Pretty easy job but left geometry undisturbed for the mo (as best I could)

While I was doing this I dropped the front of the car by 8mm to level it off with the rear.

Templates for canards created - not sure whether I am actually going to fit them but we will see :) I will cut them out this afternoon and see what they look like :D

I have also made the measurements for gurney flap to fit to the rear spoiler and calculations for the drawings made :thumb: That should be interesting :)

here are the canards cut out of the carbon sheet:

i have absolutely no idea  but they dont protrude beyond the parameter of the vehicle and I have rounded the corners off so would assume they are ok.
