2004 Impreza STi WR1 - No 284 - LordG (pic heavy)

Post pictures of your car and tell us the spec. It doesn't have to be a WR1!

2004 Impreza STi WR1 - No 284 - LordG (pic heavy)

Postby LordG » Sat Aug 17, 2013 11:30 am

Hi everyone,

OK, wanted to start a bit of a thread to document my progress and my journey with 284.

Some initial details:

    - purchased 284 on 14 August 2013
    - 62,000 miles
    - FSH
    - Standard apart from
    a. Vortex Afterburner straight exit rear silencer (original Prodrive provided)
    b. Black front splitter from HT Autos with STi badge
    c. Pioneer DEH-8400BT Head unit with ipod control (original Subaru unit supplied)
    d. Silent Coat sound deadening in front doors
    e. Alpine speakers all round (not too sure what kind yet)
    f. WR1 mud flaps
    - Alloys need a refurb
    - a few expected stone chips, but what you would expect for this age car
    - interior immaculate

I am less than a week into ownership, but I am very pleased.

Here are some pics of the car 'as is' today. Before any cleaning, before anything:

Thanks chaps.

OK, after a couple of days running around, I think I am going to put the Prodrive exhaust back on (dont like the sound of the Vortex).

Dave (Previous owner) kindly gave me the original prodrive silencer as part of the deal.

So I decided to clean up the original while it was not on the car.

Yes AutoSol is what I use on my tailpipe when I have time to kill. Just takes a whiles to get the thing looking nice if its as caked by soot as mine is

Been using Solvol Autosol for years on chromed bits, sadly not much chrome around these days, but it makes it look amazing. Anyone remember polishing BUMPERS, HEADLIGHT TRIM and DOOR HANDLES. Sorry for shouting

Greetings all,

Sunny day today, no training today because I am injured, so a day cleaning the car. This is something I really enjoy doing. Take my time. Potter around the garage. The journey has started to make 284 my own. Much much much more to do, but a good start.

Today I:
    - rinsed and washed then rinsed car
    - clayed car
    - washed car, then rinsed, then dried
    - applied detail
    - applied first coat of protection
    - now waiting 24hr then apply next coat

A good day getting to know my WR1.

Here are some pics:

Very nice, not quite sure how you did that process, maybe you need to give mine the full works next weekend so I get the idea?

Interesting to see you have toyo proxies on, watch out in the wet with them, great dry grip but limited grip in greasy or wet road conditions but good value for money.

Pirelli P Zero Neros were originally sold with the car and are a great wet and dry weather all rounder. If getting a lot of squeal via track days you need to be looking at a semi slick like Toyo R888's in which case you would want a set of winter wheels for the wet seasons as R888's would be terrible. :D

Cheers Mega (can i call you that? lol). - the Toyo Proxies were on the car when i got her. Must admit I normally run with Vredestein tyres - but not had a car like the WR1 before so happy to be guided/advised on good tyres - thanks.

Re the was process, I am just starting out in the detailing (washing) world. This is the process and products I have used in the past and got great results...(I know we all do things differently, but seems to work for me):

Here is a complete list of the products i purchased:

- Zaino Claybar
- Zaino All-in-One
- Zaino Z5
- Zaino Z2
- Z6 - detailing spray, use as a"wipe-down" after applying AIO, Z5 & Z2...
- Z7
- Z16 - tyre finish.
- A couple of their applicators

Application:
- Wash,rinse and clay

- Wash, rinse and dry.

- Apply a single coat of Zaino All-in-One

- Wipe down with Z6 detail spray when AIO is buffed off.

- Apply Z5

- Wipe down with Z6 detail spray when Z5 is buffed off (then wait 24hrs)

- Apply Z5

- Wipe down with Z6 detail spray when Z5 is buffed off (then wait 24hrs)

- Apply Z2

- Wipe down with Z6 detail spray when Z2 is buffed off (then wait 24hrs)

- Apply Z2

- Wipe down with Z6 detail spray when Z2 is buffed off

Wow a comprehensive washing plan there. Did you say you lived near Leeds and fancied doing another WR1 soon?

Little update. Car has been to RCM today for a 'brace and belt' service and general checkover. A fair amount of service work carried out, but I wanted to make sure 284 was all in good working order. The following work was carried out:

    - 'D' Service
    - Timing Belt Kit
    - Replace Gearbox oil
    - Replace Rear diff oil
    - Replace Vortex Afterburner with standard Prodrive Exhaust
    - Replace Aircon belt
    - Replace Air Con tensioner
    - Replace Alternator belt
    - Replace Brake fluid

lots of work, but I want to make sure the car is in good working order and all the belts changed/new.

Now to start on cleaning the engine bay and enjoying the car knowing she is purring nicely and being given a clean bill of health by RCM!

Crikey, looks like you are hooked with the 1 then, well done with the detailing, it looks stunning. Just going to chuck myself down the stairs and get a week of work to get a shine like that. :)

Cheers Steve. just make sure it is not a big flight of stairs :D

Seriously, the 'detailing' is not rocket science, just find a process, follow it, take your time - does not have to be done in one day and you dont need to spend £100's.

And yes, totally hooked on the 1. much better now it has the Prodrive back box - this is just my personal preference (not loud), but rumbles nicely.

Very glad to hear the car is solid and a good base to move forward with.

Thanks guys.

For the engine I had the engine degreased and steam cleaned, this gave me a good basis to work from. I then degreased again using "Meguiars Engine Cleaner". Once washed and dried again i used this:

303 AEROSPACE PROTECTANT

Amazing stuff, just spray all over the engine, leave to dry naturally for 6 hours. I am really pleased with the end result, still some nooks and crannies to get clean - much better than the original pic.

Had an hour to spare today so decided to give the WR1 it's own address in the garage :D

Actually considering writing up all the cars I have ever owned, like a memorial wall for all past and current cars!

Anyhow, just started with the WR1.
