Hi there,

Wanted to ask what you have had done to your WR1 to get over 400bhp!! Can you recommend any decent tuners?

What do you notice about the extra power over a standard WR1? I notice that (probably due to the large turbo) there isn't much below 2000rpm and when you pull out of a junction there's nothing...nothing... then all hell breaks loose!!

Mid range is great, love getting stuck behind people at the moment...

welcome! where in the country are you based, depending on that we can recommend tuners

I'm based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

Would like to know if there are any decent servicing places. I've been using KT Green Subaru who seem ok but I've not had a service there yet, only a gearbox oil seal replaced around the front drive arm and the battery checked.

Don't know if there are any good/bad experiences because I am guessing that people don't get to service a WR1 everyday and I'd like to know if was being done properly... not expecting it to be cheap but I just want a quality service!!

Cheers

Welcome, "John of Harrogate"

There's quite a few threads regarding raising the bhp up from 320 to 360. Have a look at 'Scutch's' programme of work. If you REALLY need 400 horses then be ready to spend just a tad more than you will getting to 360 which is where I'm stopping ......

If your on about me pretty much everything that can be change via bolt on bits, turbo, turbo inlet duct, exhaust, fmic, injectors, caik headers up-pipe. I've used WRC Tech but they are long gone. Now use DSautos in Aylesbury they've been ok with me, plus they are the main dealer for APS product and pretty much everyhing on ours is APS

I've not really noticed the diffrence due to upgrading the turbo over the standard one down in the lower revs, after about 2500rpm you really notice the diffrence, you find its best to keep it singing rather than let it "bog down"......now there's a quote from years gone by !

As for pulling out on junctions you wait until safe to do so

Thanks for the tip. I am not sure whether to upgrade at the moment, was interested in what others have done and whether they would recommend their mods or steer clear... I am slightly concerned about the re-sale value if you modify these cars. Are the mods easily removable?

btw... who or what is scutch? (new here so not sure if it is a member or a garage?!?)

Hi, Yeah, it was you that I was asking but didn't know how to reply with your post!!
Did you get the work done bit by bit or all at once? Did you notice any unreliability creeping in or does it still start first time?

Won't ask about mpg, standard guise is poor enough!! Sometimes I find I have to make my own space at junctions :?

Welcome, mate

Ever considered braking later instead of putting more horses in ?

Think Mick said it right, stick with a certain level.

If I'd gone again for a scoob, i'd have stuck to max 360bhp (afterwards uprating becomes very laborious and expensive) and I'd rather have chosen to get the weight down (by chosing a Spec C) and work on the suspension and the brakes in order to make it faster point to point.

Cheers.... I take it you HAD a scooby and now own an Evo?

I know most of the car mags and programmes like top gear say the Evo is more hardcore and faster than the equivalent standard subaru but using it day to day, would you say this is true? (i.e. not on a track!) Would you go back to a subaru?

I had a 2003 STi, when they still made them more hardcore than the soft 2.5. in 2006 I had to swap it as it was end of lease.

The Evo (nor the scoob) are daily runners though. Just weekend toys to have a blast. For that the Evo is indeed more hard-core and in Northern Finland, where you got 7 months of snow and ice, it is much more efficient.

I'd only ever go back to the Subaru if they make something like the old Spec C and I can rework the car seriously. Standard? No way. If I want a comfy car that goes fast, I'll have a Porker, not a scoob.

Reliability is fine at the mo, nearly 30k's with above 340bhp, and about 1500 miles with 400.

Fuel comsumtion varies, I've had 330 miles per tank on a return trip from Macclesfield to home, but on average i'd say 230 per tank.

Work done in a few different stages, but knowing what I know now, wish I'd done it in one hit, it defo cheaper that way.

Had a test drive in this car about a year and a half ago from S & S subaru in Ayr.
Had about 25k miles on it at the time and a one owner car.

The last owner was from Cheam, Surrey. It's done 38.5k now. Had a new engine from Subaru under warranty at 37k. 3 owners now including me.

How come you didn't buy this at the time?

I was looking for a mint example at the time and this one had a few scuffs on the bumpers and alloys. Car seemed to drive ok, but i thought they were asking a lot of money for it.
Went to look at another one that same week with only 6700 miles on it and total mint, asking price was just 1k more so a took the plunge and bought that one.
Do you know what happened to the old engine i thought they were meant to be bomb proof?

It wasn't a mint example when I bought it but I got it for a decent price so wasn't complaining. I'll have the work done to get it mint as my brother does bodywork spraying and has access to full kit to do it properly so I'll call some favours in!!

The engine had a cracked block, Subaru said there was a "known problem with some of the STi's" so they replaced the engine under warranty.... Basically a brand new engine so I wasn't complaining!! Seems to run ok still, only done a few hundred miles in it so far, only drive it weekends... love the performance!

Never heard of that on a 2.0 sti !

Some 2.5 sti's have block issues when tuned a bit

Only repeating what I was told by Subaru, it wasn't common apparently but 'known' (fault in the manuf. range of blocks perhaps?). It was all done under Subaru warranty, I'd hate to think what that would have cost to pay for outright.

At least I know the history of the engine currently in the car!!
