Power Upgrade

Postby POESY » Mon Dec 04, 2006 5:01 pm

Well after much dilema the 400 is staying and is going to receive the Power Upgrade.

Stage 1 is a set of fast road cams + remap

followed by

Stage 2 which is a turbo + intercooler upgrade + remap.

The parts are to be supplied by Performance Parts Online.

The work carried out by Owen Developments.

The warranty situation to be negotiated with Mitsubishi :?

Stage 1 should see around 450bhp/390lbft.

Stage 2 should then take it over the magic 500bhp level, with around 440lbft.

Theres likely to be a 6 - 8 month gap between each stage being supplied/fitted to allow my bank account time to cope

The parts for stage 1 should arrive this month and the car will then hopefully be at Owens mid jan for fitment.

Prices not yet finalised, but stage 1 looks like being significantly cheaper than stage 2 (which may well have to wait until bonus time next summer).

Yeah, likely to be slow as an RS rear diff will probably have to go in between stages 1 and 2 and perhaps some uprated rear brakes - alcon now do a 4-pot kit for the rear, pricey though

Also looking into ways of strengthening the gearbox.

The evo is 2 years old in jan, and the plan now is to keep it for another couple of years, after all it not even done 14k miles yet !!! The porka would just take up too much money and leave very extra spending cash. Try again in a couple of years

So, instead, going to throw around

Yes, the fronts are 6 pots - superb brakes the alcons, thoroughly recommend them.

Huss at Performance Parts Online is an alcon dealer - he'll do you the best price by a margin.

The brakes are the best part of my car by far - can brake sooooooooooo late from HUGE mph, never fadded once, whether on road or track.

I dont rate the standard brembo callipers on the evos at all - my 6 was terrible at stopping, and its a lighter car than yours, with less bhp.

Poesy, will the upgrades make the 400 more driveable, spreading the power and torque across more of the rev range?

The powerband will be a bit widder, it'll rev higher, but the turbo spool up will still be more or less the same, coming on full boost at around the same rpm.

TBH the 400 isnt as undriveable as people make out. Once you get used to it its just the car's characteristics. Put it this way all the moans and groans about it tend to be people who havent even tried the car. My mum has, and she can drive it just fine

I had a test drive in one and the only wierd thing was the clutch, but i'm sure i could get used to it, also the serious lag, but then, who drives a 400 to drive under 4rpm all the time ?

One of the inevitable drawbacks of fitting larger turbos is the extra lagg. But obviously overall out and out power is limited by turbo size, so in the quest for more and more bhp then bigger is better :D

The aim is to have the ALS fully functional too. So when its time to "gun it" this can be switched on and hopefully the car will be more responsive. We'll see.

Its going in to Owens Developments next month.

The AVR boost controller has arrived and the plan is to run 2 settings. Low and high boost basically. Low boost will be more-or-less out of the box setting, slightly lower infact, around 1.5 bar continuous (equates to about 350bhp on an evo) and I guess this will be the most used everyday setting. High boost will be much more aggressive, peaking at 1.9 bar and holding 1.75. The switch to high boost will also tell the ecu to activate the ALS system. No idea what the power and torque figure will be in the configuration at the present moment. Watch this space.

They want the car for 2 days and hopefully the first outing to try it all out will be snetterton at the end of march.
