Are side exhausts allowed in the UK ?

I know they were not allowed in certain countries in Europe.

No idea, but it might well be that an exhaust to the right is forbidden for pollution purposes (i.e. pedestrian inconvenience)...

Check it, all European cars have their exhaust on the left.

The SLR has a side exhaust, I think, but on the left.
