Drove both 4's yesterday on small an greasy roads.

Can confirm it still has RWD character if you drive it normally (i.e. you do not adapt your driving to use 4WD).

If it's wet and greasy, it still needs the traction control etc to keep it in line as, just as with the diffs of the scoob, the 4wd is too slow to react once you get the rear to loose grip.

So 4wd I think is only useful if you either need extra grip on very slippery roads (which is why I looked at the 4's only), or if you like the (quite counter-intuitive) driving style of using 4WD (which means being very clean and gentle in corner to action the 4WD before exit).

Otherwise I'd save the money (and get a bigger boot than the one of the 4wd where you can only fit one supermarket shopping bag).

Great sound... :thumb:

My father has a 996 Carrera 4S - best car ive ever driven (or could that be the SL55 AMG :? ).

He recently test drove the new Cayman S and recons its that good he may change. Wonder how much he'd sell me the 911 for

No fan of looks of the Cayman and lack of space for kids in the back a personal constraint.
Lack of 4WD is another issue.

Most of all, as J.C. said when testing the "Coxster", you'd feel you didn't get the real thing when standing next to a 911 at the traffic lights.

BTW: Point-to-point, I'm pretty sure even a (low power) standard STi (as some tw@t on this forum calls them) will be faster than a 911 C4S. I couldn't get away from the impression that I'd be able to go through corners 10-15mph faster with the scoob than with the 911.

Still... the sound... 8)

My boss has a C4 Cab , I have raced him many times...
On the bends i would say its very equal but the wr1 is alot quicker out of the bends.. He's alot quicker in to the bends and can out brake me most of the time

The long straights He's blows me after 90 mph...

What is wrong with me saying that I am under the impression point-to-point even a standard STi will be faster than a C4S ?

Suspension on the C4S is not as stiff and focussed as on the STi, full stop. The C4S is a GT, the STi is a rallycar without stickers. If you use it properly on small roads, the scoob allows to go through corners faster.

On motorways, you might claim a 911 will be faster. But the guy who wants to have a discussion on how he can do 175 vs 155 on the M25, I suggest he has that discussion in the pub with his friends who are under the illusion they are the kings of sideways driving without ever having put a wheel on ice in their lives...

The above still doesn't mean a 911 is not as fun to drive as a scoob or other Japanese 4WD machinery on small roads. Well in contrary.

Some tend to mix up speed and fun a bit too often.

I think some of us are living in scooby dream world ....

I would never say my scoob is quicker than a 911 but to compare the two is like chalk and cheese...

Pointless.... I would swap mine today for C4S.

I wouldn't swap mine for a 911. I'd want both on the drive :thumb:

Ok , i ll agree with that :thumb:

I would too.

I think some miss the point. Both cars should not be compared on speed. As said earlier, too often speed and fun are mixed up.

My point was simple: if you think you'll suddenly lose any scoob by driving a 911 ? It more depends on the circumstances, but on average ... I doubt it.

The car however has very different qualities that make it fantastic to drive.

I'd honestly say the C4 was as fun to drive enginewise as the C4S on normal roads.
The S however inspired more confidence on the twisties because of its electronic suspension. The normal C4 became a bit 'light' at a few occasions.
Then again, take a C4 and specify the PASM and you leveled the field again.

Didn't notice the 30bhp on the small roads and on the 30 mins I had in each car. Even liked the rounder engine note of the 3.6 more than the metallic sound of the S. Matter of taste.

so the question now is,

brand new shape carrera 4s or,
year old carrera 4s or,
" " " " convertible or,
3yr old turbo or GT3

decisions ,decisions , your drive will be sooooo 8) bro!!

I'm skint mate!

I would need the new 911. Not enough legroom in previous models.

C4S would be my choice!

Hm... The 'old boy' doesn't sound like some-one who will be kept out of his sleep at night because of the small extra of a 911 compared to a Cayman.

My wife will keep me awake at night if I'd get one and she figures out how much it costs... :?

I am under the impression that santa is coming to my house on 25th december - most people know this not to be true !!!

Same arguement - a C4S is a race car without the rollcage !!!

That Muller bloke is supposed to be the best on ice and cant even win the BTCC against a team from Halfords.
I cant drive on ice whatsoever - but as i live in london that really doesnt affect my life. Good at getting into tiny little parking spaces though
