Evo-scoob-RS4 ?

Postby The Swede » Sun Nov 20, 2005 4:36 pm

My other half has been offered a place to specialise in clinical genetics at the Oulu University hospital. :?

Upside, instead of having to go through another 6 or 7 years of hard work in the UK, she'd be a specialist in 2 years and 8 months. Which is a plus for moving to the UK afterwards as we'll be spared of all the oncall andother cr@p.

Downside, I got to stay another 3 years virtually in this country.

I 'promised' her that if we stay, she gets another scooby-type car.(OK, maybe not blue with gold wheels this time).

M6 definitely ruled out in this case.

Considering a few options:
1. Get an Evo 9 340 and let WRC or so take it to 380 or 400 bhp.
2. Get a second hand scooby (WR1?) and spend some more on mod'ing to get it to similar performance.
3. Get an Audi RS4.

Any thoughts, other ideas ?

Spec C still under consideration. Although I was not a big fan of the very loud exhaust at low speeds (notreally something to 'fly under the radar' with).

Although I like the Subaru and the friendly owners, the Evo has a plus because of its diffs (scoob will have to be 2005 or WR1 hence) and space in the back.

I was also wondering whether it is worth spending the extra on an Evo 340 vs 300 or on a more powerfull Impreza vs a standard STi if I am going to modify it anyway. Are the more powerful versions of these cars cheaper to tune to 350/380 bhp ?

I agree Spike.

The problem with the RS range is that they are subtle in my opinion. Maybe you are right and it is a car for the distant future.

And wait for it to go BANG !!!

The 340 is based on an MR - aluminium body panels, bilstein suspension, magnesium wheels, updated Recaro, etc - the 300 isnt.

The RS4 was tested on Top Gear last night - seemed good, but for an extra 10k you could have an M5 and a whole lot more power :D

 Why ? Scoobs any better ? I see quite a few scoobs on this forum running 350bhp or more without too much problems. Plus why does the Evo 8 FQ400 not go bang ? The engine is the same basis.

I am surprised. Need to say, I was looking at the Evo 9, not 8. The only difference (bar the power) the 340 seems to sport on the 9 compared to the 300 or 320, is the Leather/Alcantara interior (and the stupid smartnav). Alloys, etc seem exactly the same. Or did I get that completely wrong ?

Would somebody have the kindness of sending an atlas to POESY ??

For 7 months of the year, a 112bhp 1984 Audi 80 1.8 Quattro will drive rounds around your 500bhp M5 in this region.

The 400 has the same size engine as the other evos but thats where the similarities end - the 400 has a fully forged, Flow Race Engines built unit mated to custom Garrett turbo controlled by a motec 800 ecu with uprated feul lines, injectors, pumps, etc,etc,etc...the list just goes on and on.

All 9s are based on the MR chasis, so no problems there.

The Audi does look like a nice car no doubt - recon my father may look at one, therefore I wont

2 different typers of cars

evo and wr1 are closely in the same boat
both will turn heads and carse a major stir when either of those two cars arrive at any place (do you want this)

The RS4 will just blend in, only the die hard car fans know what it is and what its all about.
The Kids wont notice you when you drive through a town or city.

SO if you want discreet performance without all the hasle of people trying to race you all the time, id go for the audi.

but if you want to race everyone all of the time and cause a stir everytime you park up, WR1 and then finaly the Evo.

Your call

Weird you say so about the Evo, Brian.

I'd have expected the Evo to be the most discreet. I would have been sure if I parked a silver grey Lancer here, only people who noticed the British plates would look at it. Then again, never had an Evo or a 'non-blue' Impreza.

The Impreza is really bad in WRC blue with the gold wheels. Add to that the bright orange UK numberplates... The Finns see it as Makinen's old rallycar. All kids pointing at it... Impossible to pass unnoticed.

Anybody tried the RS4 yet ?

Now that would be a sensible upgrade. A3 upgrade to RS4 would certainly put a smile back on your face and a few stains in the pants.

You seem to rate your soul quite highly... Doubt I'd get much for mine.

I'm surprised Audi could organise a test drive in a RS4. They certainly couldn't sort one out in a A3 3.2 for the wife. The best they offered was a V6 TT which I quote "will feel exactly the same"... No surprise they lost out on a sale for such a stupid comment.

Just not sure if ground clearance will be useful here and I need a car I can blast the family to supermarket or to the nearby skiing slopes with...
