New Cheap Runabout

Well I wanted to keep the miles off the WR1 as using it daily isnt much fun in stop start rush hour and is putting miles on it unnecessarily... SOooo I went on the hunt for a cheap runabout... went to view a skoda fabia VRS deisel (6k)... didnt like it...

went to have a go in a superchipped Astra CDTI 150BHP - chipped to 200bhp...(6k) Very torquey engine, about on par with standard focus ST!... but wheels spinning all over in the mildly moist roads...

So went to look at a Golf TDI (9k) which i liked, not quite as pully as the astra but a nice all rounder but couldnt justify the extra money for a car the same age...

So... ended up getting a test drive in a different golf whilst I was there. Now I dont quite know what happened or how it happened, must be some voodoo stuff going on but between the test drive and walking away, but I had a spur of the moment impulse moment and bought the car. Considering I was looking for cheap, economical runabout ive got the cheap bit right at least..(5k) lol... When I got home the missus went spare but "anyway"...

Car is a 2004 VW Golf 2.8Litre V6 4 Motion, will post some pics up soon once I get chance to clean it and take some pics. Needs a bit of work doing to it as it has been lowered with coilovers and wont get over a speedbump so that needs sorting asap. Also has inner wing induction kit which needs taking off as the filter is clearly getting drenched by puddles. Apart from that given its a 7yr old car, seems to do the job nicely. 204bhp, 4wd, does about 27mpg from first indications compared to 11mpg that the wr1 does for the daily commute so all round looks cool. This will give me a chance to get my surge issues sorted on the WR1 without being stuck without a car for work :)

Ha ha. I like the way you looked at diesel, diesel, diesel... then went for the 2.8 4motion!! :D

Cool cars though, and pretty nippy! Much better choice than the GTI's of that time

lol like the fact its cheap at that price!

roadtax will be a bummer and fuel costs not brilliant but yeah cheaper than the WR1 to run. for that price id have looked out for a A4 quattro sport diesel. 2.5V6 180bhp there about 6-7k for a 04plate ish but really nice. decent choice though with the petrol!

Yer?
Seems okay, needs a good service and new plugs etc but it feels nippy and sounds good being a V6.

I had one of these. Shite shite shite. But that is good because it was a daily tool and it just worked without any emotion whatsoever. No need to wash, great test platform for new cleaning methods, park anywhere if it is still there bonus....

Needs the induction kit to add a little sparkle. K&N do an inner bay kit.

I agree with Stu'. The suspension on the Golf IV was also a disaster.

If you want a cheap runabout, why not go for something Japanese at least and get at least a reliable car. Last thing you want is a runabout that breaks down regularly, which you will defo have with the Audi TDi.

Why not a tidy Honda Type R ? Or a Jaguar X-type 3.0V6 Sport in manual if you need bigger?

We got a Lexus IS300 as cheap runabout. Not exiting either, but reasonably comfortable and quick and super reliable and cheap to run.

I know loads of people who had those age motors from VAG, and they been fine!! Plus the 4motions got good engine plus 4wd, more than enough as a daily driver!

If I want emotion and speed I get in the WR1... If I want a car to get to n from work in the dodgy weather like the snow of tonight, it will be better than your other fwd cars.

The induction kit looks new and is aparently good, but being inner wing its going to get full of water according to the garage so need to come off. Ordered new airbox today - £77 to get that back to standard. Induction kit should sell for around £100ish so should be cool.

Seems to be rapid up to 2.8k rpm... then is flat 3k-5k.. then 5k to 6k roars and a little bit of power. Dont know if this is a characteristic of the car or the lack of a service and TLC will know after next week when its been in.

TBH A classic WRX or bugeye would have done the job but I dont want 2 subarus on my drive outside the house. My requirements were a cheap runabout with 5 doors, looked at clio sports and type-r's but all 3drs :(

I really wouldn't go for the standard airbox. I checked my garage for the one I took off. Sadly, I think I binned it.

The V6 4motion lacks any sort of personality in standard form. A K&N induction kit really does help it smile a little. I suspect the cost difference between a standard box and an inner bay K&N is minimal???

Well its got a big flat spot from 3k-5k rpm. Vagcom shows up all sorts of errors with maf sensors and airflow and engine issues so garage advised putting std airbox back on. Inner wings often get flooded so they said if getting a kit to avoid those at all costs. Will keep the kit and possibly ebay it. Std airbox = 77 notes, a K&N Typhoon is £220 so a fair price difference + 65 on insurance for an air filter that makes not a lot of difference.

Anyway we will see how it is after the service and std airbox. :)

This is not inner wing:

I here there are MAF issues but mine never had a problem in that department. Everything else went wrong though.

Congrats. Keep us posted on how it fares, esp from a reliability point of view.

Was it lowered by the former hoodie-owner?

As you know that the mobile phone signal jammer can cut off the signals of the mobile phones and soon make it impossible to make phone calls or send messages. In this way when you need the peaceful condition and want to stay in it, you can just use the best mobile phone jammer to help you achieve your goal. And now as the technology develops with high speed the advanced High Power Signal Jammer has come into the market and are well welcomed by the group of people who need the jammer product.
