Purely hypothetical, you have a Merc S63 AMG already at home providing fast and comfortable transport.
You are now looking for something different for the weekends but you want it to be driveable by your girlfriend too.

Some contenders. (none of them to be bought new and all available for similar money)(well, kinda similar-ish money so you'd be considering any of them)

How do you think about these?

Any alternatives?

Note: pointless to suggest Monaro's or other bulky things that don't stick to the road. You want something that is razorsharp.

Swede,

This may surprise you, and it also surprises me a little BUT having driven them all.

And despite it not having the power quoted by the manufacturer.

I would without doubt take the RS4 it is a fantastic looking, fantastically built car, with lovely seats, absolutley hands down thats your one.

P.s its the best all round driver of the four.

Thanks. When you say 'all round driver', what do you mean?

The person here would normally consider the S63 as his 'all rounder' and look for his other car to be the more focussed one. Something that has a sense of 'event' when you drive it.

Have you ever had a 911 and an R8 ??

Booked a drive with the R8 for Saturday afternoon. Will keep you posted
Hoping to get behind the wheel of the M3 soon too.

Wife's RS4 used a lot of oil when the it was new. Something like a litre per 1k miles. Last time I checked it, it need 1/4 litre after 2kmiles.

R8 or 911 would be my choice give the AMG is already on the drive. But first of all, I'd pay for an operation to have my eyes opened?

Swede,

No I havent owned an R8, by all rounder I mean all weathers, and the RS4 is combined the best at everything, it has the looks, the sound, the toys, the safety, performance and 4 doors.

The New M3 uses oil aswell at appx the same rate as Bro suggests, so does the R8 and the RS4, it appears to be the norm with them.

Plus if you were going to get an R8 you would want the V10 version, the 4.2 just isnt enough ummphh for a car that looks like it should do 200mph.

Did either of you drive the R8? Please share the experience :thumb:

I think Dan did but cannot recall what he thought.

The R8 V10 is still very expensive and really a step above the other cars. If I pay 100K or nearly for a car, I would start thinking towards an Italian car, not an Audi.

Actually, I don't find the 911 S powerful either. It's a fast car, but nothing different to an RS4 or an M3 and slower than the Evo.
However, it really drives very well. Very light, precise and when you open it up and hear the scream of the flat six, you really have the feeling you drive something special.

I've driven them all swede, it was a while ago in the R8 though, the first thing I can tell you is that I could hardly squeeze into it, the second thing is that it was not as fast as I had hoped it would be, very sharp on the steering though I felt, despite people telling me they thought it was numb and had no steering feel, not sure where they got that from.

I hate 911's so no point in asking me about those, I've actually never been as underwhelmed as when I drove a GT3, No sense of speed, miserable sounding thing, garish interior (mustard leather) and generally just a hair dressers hack!

M3, Yep the fastest of the 4 car's put forward, very nice bit of kit, looks good in saloon, but the powers higher up the rev range as with most M's.

It would still be the wonderful RS4 for me, despite the reality of actual dyno figures as low as 366bhp from my research many come in around 375bhp which is a lot less than Audi claim, and of course the reason why it cannot touch the bonafide 420bhp M3.

Nice :)

I assume I will not have many problems squeezing behind the wheel of the R8, although I do hope there is enough headroom.
Brilliant to hear it's sharp. I tend to think that you cannot cure issues with the handling but you can always somehow compensate a 'lack of power' by just braking later and pushing harder. Had plenty of practice with my box standard low power STi  And with 420bhp, I assume it's all relative.
I'm actually looking forward to checking it out on Saturday :D

Did you drive the 997 or 996 GT3 ? Saw the latter at the Porsche dealer last week for sale. 2003 car, 64K !

Drove a 911 C4S Targa last week and that was pretty dissappointing. The handling was just not precise enough and the car felt too heavy. Salesman told me after the drive it was clearly not the model that suited my driving as the Targa is much less rigid, which screws up the handling, and the weight of the Targa plus the weight of the 4WD does make a difference in performance.

I'd have loved a 911 CS, like they used to do a 968 CS. Just the basic car, no toys or anything sold at a lower price even.
The GT3 is a CS in a way but then with bits added again for track driving which kills the price and also makes it less able on normal roads, I find.

Defo need to get myself once in the new M3. Sounds an awesome machine.

It was a 2003 Gt3 I drove bud, the owner is actually a pal of mine, he loves it, andI'd hate to think he may read this as when I drove it I had to tell him I was impressed but the reality I didnt like the engine in the rear and the front end felt light, apparently thats part of the package but it wasnt for me.

Ive driven other 911's turbo and targa, thought the turbo was pretty quick but they just arent for me, and of course when you buy a porsche, there are always so many other better porsches on the road ?

You have no itention of buying a 911, RS, R etc.... You have been testing 911s and banging on about them for years... This has nothing to do with "earning" money. You just love the salesman being nice to you...

S2000 honda not to bad. may not be for you thought with it being convertable and 2 door

few maserati's around your budget.

if your going up in price always got the option of the new skyline

or worst comes to worst you could get the new focus RS

sure this choice of cars will turn a few heads

I ordered an RS4 long before your wife bought one, as you will remember. And I also never joked about the AMG. Unlike you I actually buy one rather than moan on a website about it.

The 911, I never came around buying one indeed as I always found a ricerocket that was more entertaining plus I had to use the car in Oulu.
That last constraint fell away now, so I can look at 2WD cars again.

No hurry at the moment. Evo comes off lease in August only. So taking the time to look around.
Just figured out that the Lexus plus the Evo is a bit of a waste as neither car really drives a lot.

Thats a very tricky list there swede.

I'd go for the porka for road use (and keep the meg for trackdays). My perfect garage tbh.

If it was a car for all occassions; road, track, shopping, etc then the new M3 does look like a serious peice of kit so it'd be that for me.

For looks it'd be the R8 though - in red 8)

1. If you would read the other people's posts sometimes rather than be so full of your own waffle, you would know the order on the RS4 was cancelled because Audi couldn't be arsed to deliver the car. A car promised for delivery in July 2006 suddenly moved to January 2007 with no compensation or intermediate solution offered by Audi. WTF would I accept that? There are many more manufacturers making nice cars !

2. You are a fcuking moan. Never heard the fuss you had to make because I didn't wash my AMG according to the standards you think one should set.

3. Maybe Chris and myself try a few things and think twice before spending the cash because it's our own cash with parts with. I assume I am also clear on that one ?
