Focus ST

Postby Scutch » Tue Nov 18, 2008 9:25 pm

Went out in my mates "Eye Killer" Orange Focus ST the other day. My my, there's some torque in those bad boys!

I was actually surprised by the price of the new shape ones, too (facelift 2008)

Not bad... not bad.

Normally its not right for so much power, and indeed, torque, to be powered through the front wheels :

There must be a limit for FWD power/torque to make them driveable day to day?

There is - but its very much dependant on weather conditions, road surface, tyre type and out and out mechanical grip from the chassis.

The ST is a nice car - when I test drove a load of hatches it came down to either that or the megane, I went for the megane others would choose the ford. Depends on what you want oout of the car tbh. No doubt the ford its a faster straight line but through the twisties and round a track the meg is clearly the better choice.

Someone say Focus ST??

Legendary cars mate... They handle well and put the power down very well up to a certain power level. A simple £600 remap gets you up from 225bhp to 265bhp and loads more torque. out of the box the focus st boosts to 0.6 bar, the turbo max is 1.3 bar.. most remaps whack it up to 1.2 bar to be safe which has a huge impact on the torque and speed of the car.

I went for a new exhaust / intercooler / induction kit etc. with mine to get it where it is but a remap gives you 3/4 of the performance for bugger all money.

With regards to the Megane, its much more a track car... the ford is a lot comfier than most hot hatches and rolls a lot until you uprate the suspension on them. If tracking and handling is what you want then i too test drove all the hot hatches at the time and prefered the renault.

The focus is cheap / mods are cheap / cheap to insure... a great car for people on a budget who cant afford the running costs of a scoob. Wet weather lets them down if you start modding though as you cant get the power down above 260-270bhp very easily unless you are easy on the power.

The one in the pistonheads link has code red on it which means it will have had a turbo conversion to a slightly bigger more laggy turbo but one that boosts up to 1.4 bar. good side to this is loads of top end power. down side is you loose a lot of the low down grunt as the full power is only mapped from gear 3 upwards. Using the standard turbo the boost can be mapped to all gears. Code Red were formerly wolf concept - a shop front for Wolf Racing in germany. They went bust and started again as Code Red. Both run by a chap called Garry based in his small unit over in Stockport.

 if ford are still thinking of charging 25-30k for it, most people will be put off when you can get an ST for 17k + 2k of mods to get it up to 330bhp.. will have to be something special for that money for it to really sell..

Soooooooooooooooooooooooo much more to a car than how much horsepower its got.

I know - there are Focus ST's in germany kicking out 450bhp but there comes a limit to how much power is right for a car before making it undriveable. 300ish is enough for a fwd car especially with that much torque. Ive bent 2 driveshafts with 500nm in it so backed my maps off a bit to make it last a bit longer.. at 1k a drive shaft its an expensive hobby... :)

As for swapping the renault, if it doesnt break down all the time like two of my renaults have in the past it will be good fun :)

Ignition Coils are designed to go after 4-5 yrs in renault meganes according to an engineer i know that works at sunwin renault. This was on the previous model shape without the big ass... dont know about the newer ones though.
