WR1 stats....

Reading a car mag at work today at stats of cars & the 0-60 of the wr1 is 4.2secs, it doesn't state if thats using launch control or not? Its quite impressive compared to other cars that you would class as a 'fast car' just wondered if its the same driving it on the road, does it match the figures? Does it keep up or destroy
Anyone had a little play with a 'fast car', how did the wr1 perform?

Mike Wood (prodrive guru)did the 0-60 times with the press car, it was launched several times with no transmission damage apparently.

I dont know about 4.2 seconds but i do know that being a bit kind to the clutch and gearbox still fires you down the road at a pretty impressive rate

And it keeps on going !

4WD are hard to get off the line fast unless you do a "launch" compared to other hot hatches - unless its raining of course which is where you leave them spinning their wheels

But if you do it right the car will do a very fast launch, the main delay is changing gear as 1st gear lasts less than a second so you need quick reactions. Have launched mine twice since ive had it to experience it. But the smell of burning clutch that lasts about five miles after the launch puts you off doing it regularly. Although I know some STI drivers that do a lot of launches and claim never to had problems at standard power levels.

flip the launch control/anti-lag switch and then get foot flat to the floor. The good thing about having launch controlled mapped in, is that you can build boost ready for the off.

Hold the gear stick ready for 2nd, and then dump the clutch.

Leave dccd in auto mode, unless you decide to go rallying ! !
If you decide to play with it, just beware when turning at slow speeds it will bang off as if your drive shaft has broke...so best leave alone imho for normal driving !

Mines located under the radio just under the plaque.

With regards to the DCCD - leave it in auto day to day or fully open if you like rwd cars. Dont lock the diff and drive around corners slowly otherwise you will break it.

The best 0-60 Evo magazine managed was 5.3 seconds if memory serves... I've launched mine only once, 7000rpm, drop the clutch and hold on... it frightened the bejesus out of me and I believe 100% it will hit 60 in 4 and a bit seconds. In the wet, too!

On the subject of full-bore starts, not many cars will cope with more than a few. I recall reading a road test with a 911 Turbo S with PDK. It managed 3 full-bore 0-100 starts before the engine management threw a wobbly. Similar story with a V10 M5, the diff started playing up. Oddly, a Veyron (apparently) will go 0-60 all day without any bother!

Not sure how long the clutch would last in my 1 if I was launching it all the time. Although I can't think of a more fun way of knackering it!

Heard launch is abit tricky and ye start saving for a new clutch if you do launch it.lol. Not a good idea messing with the 4wd/rwd diff switch then? Why would it break going round corners slow?

Because if you lock the centre diff the front and rear wheels can no longer rotate at different speeds front-to-back, so going round a slow corner all 4 wheels need to turn at different speeds and they can't. result - too much stress on diff! Locking is best used for snow/mud where you want the most traction, but the wheels can slip to avoid straining the diff.

Back to the original question, I find people with 'fast' cars don't want to race. They're presumably too scared to punt their 80k 911's up a twisty road at a decent lick. It's normally cocks in 2.0TDI A4's with the big wheels that want to try their luck.

My bro reckons the CLS63 he drove wouldn't see which way the 1 went up a B-road. On an Autobahn it would be a different matter. Same for the DBS Carbon he had and the SLS. Too much powerrrrrrrrr and not enough traction.

I did have a tussle with a Focus RS with a small '400' badge under the RS. We took off from about 30mph and he was just creeping away by the time we got to (ahem) the legal speed limit . Bearing in mind mine is still in standard trim I was quite impressed!

You have to remember the WR1 was an extremely fast car in 2004. Its now 2012, technology has moved on and a lot of cars especially diesels can catch you unaware and have a lot of pull from low down. However when driven properly the WR1 will hold its own with a lot of sporty cars and most hot hatches in standard form. If you venture into modification territory you get supercar comparable stats but at a fair premium.

In reality if you are against anything sporty there isnt a right lot of difference in it on the roads, get any hot hatch around 200bhp upwards and you will creep away but wont shoot past like he is stood still. After 200BHP you need lots of bhp to make a small difference.

The main thing is the WR1 is fun and always puts a smile on your face

I had a play against my mates 08 plate 911s. WR1 more than held its own. Very well matched with mine running same BHP at 345.

Got smoked by a Ferrari California the other day my 1 was with him up to around 40 mph though!
I love these cars..I think the guy was quite surprised. Difference is he's just parted with £170k !! What a beautiful car that is..Love the back end with the 4 x pipes

The stats for that Ferrari 3.9 secs 0 to 60 and standard 1/4 mile 12.6 so not a lot of difference between the two 4.25 and 12.8 for the One

I tell you he wasnt that far ahead of me Until 3rd gear!!. He just had more power through mid gears. After all the Cali is 4.3 Litre with 430 bhp approx! After 40 mph he was gone....Long gone.
Maybe Rocco (700 bhp) or Chris B (580 bhp) would have had him but my little 345 bhp wasnt going to!

I saw a California (I think it was anyway, it may have been a 599) by the side of the Handforth Bypass. It had been reduced to a smouldering wreck with the tearful owner waving goodbye to the fire brigade! 170k is an awful expensive BBQ!
