Nurburgring or Bust ChallengeThe Challenge
On the 28th April team ITwiser are attempting to drive to the Nurburgring in Germany to complete some laps of the ring and return back to Huddersfield in 5 days, an around trip of 1206 miles. Not an amazing feet you may think but the twist is we have to purchase a car for under £500 to do the journey (Top Gear style). Last year 20 cars set off and only 2 made it back!! All monies raised are going to the Help for Heroes Charity in full. We need to get at least £250 of sponsorship before we can start the event so hopefully we will reach the goal before the event starts. If you would like to sponsor us then please do so here: http://www.bmycharity.com/nurburgringorbustteamitwiser The Route Thurs 28th April – Huddersfield to Dover 271 miles, 4hrs 45mins Send off event and hog roast Jack o Mitre Pub Huddersfield. Suggested departure time 10.00pm, arrive Dover 4am. Drive through the night, sharing between team members is vital. Friday 29th April – Calais to Cologne 263 miles 3hrs 52 mins After breakfast on the Ferry the 2nd leg of the journey is across France/Belgium and into Germany. Accommodation will be in the Cologne region, possibly in the Overath region (twinned with the Colne Valley). Saturday 30th April – Cologne to Nürburgring 64 miles 1hr 12 mins 3rd, and final, leg of the outward journey. A fairly short drive to the Nürburgring Ring on Saturday morning, leaving the remainder of the day at and around the Nürburgring. Sunday 1st May – Nürburgring to Brussels 180 miles 2hr 45 mins Start of the journey home, back to Belgium with a Sunday night stay in the capital. Suitable accommodation will be arranged. Monday 2nd May – Brussels to Huddersfield 430 miles 8 hrs Final leg of the journey home. After breakfast in Brussels we get the 10am sailing from Calais. The Cause The Colne Valley Round Table are running the Nürburgring or Bust: Help for Heroes Rally 2011 in order to try and raise a total of £10,000 for the charity. Each team attending the rally will need a minimum of £250 sponsorship in order to start the Rally. There will also be a hog roast and raffles going on at the start of the event to build up the funds for the charity. The Charity What is H4H all about? It’s about the blokes, our men and women of the Armed Forces. It’s about Derek, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. It’s about Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could say goodbye to his wife. It is about Ben, its about Steven and Andy and Mark, its about them all. They are just blokes but they are our blokes; they are our heroes. We want to help our heroes. The charity Help for Heroes was launched in October 2007 in response to the desire of ordinary people to do something practical to help our wounded servicemen and women. As individuals we are powerless to prevent war and we feel helpless that we are unable to stop our men and women from being killed and wounded. By joining together as Help for Heroes, we are doing something practical to help; we are doing our bit. The Team We are three like minded petrol heads that jumped at the chance to go on this rally. The first problem was that there aren’t actually many cars out there for this sort of money these days following the government car scrapping scheme. So the cars that did crop up were normally sold before we had even had time to go and look at them. The other main issue was that we all had different ideas about a suitable car for the journey. Steven’s Ideas “We need a car that will go forever and get us there and back reliably. Fairly low mileage and around a 1.8 or 2.0 litre engine should be fine. rumour has it there is a knackered old Golf for sale near you fella...might be a good choice for the £500 motor?
sounds like one hell of a great week...just be sure to have a chase car with you!
Yes the whole route and stop overs have all been planned by the event organisers. We have been given the option to find our own accommodation or to stay with the party and go with them.
The car preparation so far has been updated above in post 1, I have also added pics taken tonight when I brought the car home. Enjoy the read
PS Please note teams were supposed to be 4 people and our 4th person was the local mechanic that looks after our cars, however his wife wont let him come out to play for so long so he has unfortunately had to pull out leaving us with a 3 man team.
Things not looking great this morning as the car consumed a kettle and a half of water on the way to work so I ended up diverting via the garage to get them to try and find the leak. Original post updated
Just added a load more pics and updates on this trip. We now have under a week before we set off so if anyone else would be kind enough to sponsor us then please do so asap from the site http://www.teamitwiser.com.
