I don't think you should accept the 'it's happened just deal with it and move along'.

If it were me I would be looking for a full warranted repair as a minimum (at the dealers expense) or at best a full refund of my money.

As I said before make sure you read up on your rights, talk to a few mates that have been there and done it and then make it clear what you expect the dealer to do to put it right (have you got any mates in the trade who can tell you what they would do if it happened with one of their cars?).

I don't think it's a hopeless case and here's some more reading for you for good measure (which shows too many people take it laying down.....)

The warranty came with the car, its not something I specified. However I did get the level of warranty upgraded from Bronze to Gold as part of the negotiation for the car. Still not happy I have to pay for recovery to a trustworthy garage or the diag costs but in the short term someone has to pay these costs before we can find out what the problem is, then find out if the warranty covers the failed hardware... then I can focus on getting some cash back. If I dont do it this way i dont have a car for 6 months whilst every argues in a circle. Trader has been blaming the garage for not doing the proper job etc.

I am with the RAC but they wont take you to "any" garage, only local garages if you are broken down. Given the garage I normally use and trust who do cover the warranty with warranty wise is in Halifax and im in Guiseley, the RAC were not prepared to tow me 20 miles under my level of cover. So I dont know if greenflag will be any different...

Problem with a private sales are:
1) I wouldnt be happy selling a time bomb to some poor unsuspecting customer - ive morals and need to sleep at night

2) If I was convinced with number 1) then the buyer would know where I live and could make my life a nightmare.

3) I would then be getting someone emailing me Citizens Advice letters like the ones in this post claiming ive ripped them off... Not worth the hassle in the long run.

Nice in theory though...

I don't know, but I would fear that tinkering with the Golf might make it harder to get a positive conclusion?

Greenflag Recovery Plus is nationwide so dont worry about that they will take you anywhere

as for selling it sell it with the light on. problem with the car oil light not sure what it is. will take a hit but still selling it so the potential buyer is aware it has a problem so really thats there resposibility for buying a bargain and fixing it up.

again as for cheap run around got a nice 2007 VW Jetta sport up for sale

hope you get it sorted

It is shit that this situation has got to such a poor state! You purchase a car "in good faith" and when it goes wrong you seem to have to prove the fault lies with the seller. I can see why the seller would be awkward but it doesn't change the situation that you end up with a car you can't drive!

The aftermarket ones are full of loopholes which the sellers understand better than the buyers in the majority of cases. Where proven, they usually pay out for the item damaged but not secondary damage (i.e. Wheelbearing fails causing the wheel to fall off and you damage the vehicle... the warranty pays for a new wheelbearing, not the collapsed suspension etc) OR they tell you that you have to wait until the item actually fails before they will pay out (meaning you will probably cause more damage when it actually fails). Nothing will change though. I blame this government :lol:

I dont normally buy after market warranties as most have a clause that they use which says "Fair wear and tear" to get out of most claims... but in this case im stuck... supposed to be getting the scoob left in Darlington to sort surge issue after next week... I will then be in a state where by we own 3 cars and only have use of 1... terrible really lol... unless anyone wants to lend me a car? :)

Pain in the back side is ive also taxed and insured the car for a year up front too so im hundreds out of pocket if i just hand it back plus recovery plus whatever bill im gonna get for diagnostics.. grrr

red hot poker sounds a good plan..

dont know your specifics but we do various warranty work and as a general rule an aftermarket warranty will only cover you for £1000-1500max (after that its up to you or the garage to foot the rest)

as for the "warranty" scenario i would be doing nothing until you take some advice, again generally you have 6months warranty regardless of if the car is sold as "trade / spares / etc." - but i would personally put it back on their toes as "fit for purpose", if you spent £500 he would have a point in that it was about what you would expect BUT spending £5000 most 'reasonable' people would expect it to last for longer than 100miles...........

Megaman, if you lived nearer to me I'd pop round and slap you not the salesman! You need to get a grip man. Come to terms with the fact it has happened and plan how you are going to get it fixed.

Everyone else who has posted has pretty much said the law is on your side and don't try and get it repaired yourself. The dealer appears to be taking the piss but you say earlier on the garage does not have a bad reputation- if that is true once you have armed yourself with the facts/ your rights you need to go in and meet the Manager (hopefully with a calm impartial mate to hold you back :lol: ) and make it clear you know your rights. Whether they made a small profit or big loss on the car is irrelevant- they still have legal obligations as a seller which they clearly aren't meeting. Why on earth would anyone ever buy a car from a dealer (and pay more than a private sale) if they had no greater protection than buying private- it just doesn't figure.

Do your homework and don't take a piece of 4 by 2 with nails knocked through it to the garage.

Mega, I’m sure we’re all with you on this. As difficult as it may be for you being a straight shooter, as ASP etc say go back to the top man at the firm who sold the car to you and be assertive as possible apart from taking five grand out of the end of his chin, but make sure he knows how determined you are. The car is a pile of sh1t and you want your money back pronto as he’s ripped you off. Whether he knew the condition of the engine or not doesn’t come into it, he should take the loss not you.
As for ‘diagnostics’ it’s the oil pressure warning light, that means engine knackered and needs rebuild/replacement. If it’s knackered now it was knackered when you bought the car (assuming service guys refilled with oil before starting, just don’t think about that).
Get whatever refund off the tax disc and insurance and offset losses against tax for this year.
Remain optimistic for good outcome.

Car update:

Engine bay 3/4 dismantled and a traditional oil pressure gauge used to test oil pressure. This showed definately oil pressure there even after a spin around the block. Moved the detector to oil filter and that too showed the pressure. The garage have contacted VW who suggested maybe the dashboard is faulty and may need to be replaced. Car is being sent to nearest VW garage to get VAGCOM specialist to read the latest codes and to try a new dash in the car.

Downside is im up to 4hrs labour plus recovery so far which warranty and trader wont accept. Once the thing gets fixed im going to ensure i get some money back no matter how much the guy made on the sale of the car!

well good news at least...the best thing is that you had oil pressure all along so hopefully no internal damage.

trouble is that now you had had to resort to sorting it out yourself, you are having to make claims afterwards...

whereas if you had gone in with a big bat as soon as it had happened then he 'might' of done something about it.

anyways, a few hundred notes is worth worrying about now you have a solution to it - potentially. Just make damn sure you keep all records of this and log everything...even a quick email summary AFTER a phone call so that even voice conversations can be used.

Update:

New wiring loom tried but still get the error.

Another working dash tried but still get the error.

Engine Speed Sensor now ordered (£60) will be fit shortly to see if thats causing the issue.

Could of built a car in the time its taking to diagnose the issue here... :roll:

I cant believe the bad luck you've had !! but don't let it get you down and don't take any more crap from the dealer !! Just keep on harassing them!! go back to them and don't leave till you've got it sorted and tell each customer that comes in how shit the customer service is,Believe me it works i know :wink: and remember the contract of sale is with the dealer and not the warranty people !! hope you get it sorted!!

Update:

Oil pressure sensor, oil filter, engine speed sensor, wiring loom all changed but this didnt resolve the issue.

Have had a call today saying that they were mid changing the dashboard and noticed a couple of wires hanging out of the back of the dash. They have plugged them back in and so far the car hasnt shown the fault light/beeps again.

Collecting car today to see how it goes. Then will be the fun and games of trying to claim back the hundreds this thing has cost me so far.

Robert has got both arms in casts and the op went as well as it could do so thats good. He is very frustrated that he cant do anything though as youd expect.

Thanks mate - to be honest cars have been the last thing on my mind this week. Here is a pic of my little man with a drip in foot and both arms in pots after his operation to separate web'd fingers on both hands. Probably the hardest thing ive ever had to do taking him to the operating table and putting him to sleep. Anyway its over now, all went well so he is recovering. Pots should stay on for 3-4 weeks at most all being well.
