Elections

Postby The Swede » Fri May 07, 2010 10:56 am

As a non-national, I am obviously not too involved in UK politics but I find the election results 'interesting'. And interesting in the way that the political landscape has not swung openly in one direction or the other.
In Belgium, we are used to always have a coalition government. Here this is clearly new.

I'm not asking for political opinions of which party is best, but I am wondering though whether people are happy with the election results and how people feel this will affect their life over the next 5 years.

Thoughts ?

I have a feeling that many people only vote on the issues that affect them and not on the party as a whole as to what the bigger picture is. I don't think coalition governments will work in this country because of the childish and petty nature of our politicians who (cynically) are only in it for the easy money and know that accountability is someone else's issue.

Voting on incidents like the war in Iraq or Afghanistan, to me, are not singlar issues, the economic mess is not a singular issue, immigration is not a singular issue but everyone wants to blame someone for it.

Everyone is at fault in some way.

My philosophy - Look after yourself, your family and be kind to others.

Whoever you vote in, you will get a Politician.

bloody hell john thats a bit deep and meaningful for a Friday

people at work are saying there were hundreds of students that got asked to let old people go first to vote. they then blocked the sudents voting who had been there queing for hours.

i think one woman is suing the local authority for 750 quid because it violates her human right to vote or something...

no idea what will happen with a hung parliament but it doesnt sound great...

So the majority says the result is no good.

What would have been a good result then ? Lib Dem as overall majority? Labour back in charge ?

Speaking PURELY on from an economic viewpoint... Labour stay in power because although things aren't going well presently, it isn't their fault... correct me if I'm wrong but the rest of the world are in the same predicament?
They are spending a lot on health and education which is always necessary as a fundamental in the ecomonic development of our nation (or we can rely on educated immigrants from abroad which everyone is pissed off about <immigration> and was a massive election issue)...

the conservatives will cut spending sooner than the others and YES that will start cutting the national debt but it ALSO put millions more out of work... (meaning it will take longer to cut the national debt because less people will be paying tax and more people will be claiming social security pushing the debt higher) more businesses will close and we will be back to when the Torys were last in power and fooked the economy up... AND to top it all... when we do eventually recover we will have no education and health services because they'll all have been sunk and need massive re-investment to get them up to scratch... just like the railways under the torys, the strikes under the torys and the interest rates (remember 15%?) under the torys (I remember Thatcher saying the high interest rates were necessary for the country and everyone had to lump it... wtf??)

Not that I really have an opinion on this subject

37% voted for Cameron - Correct.

63% don't want Cameron - This is INCORRECT. You cannot conclude a your hypothesis from the figures to hand. The vote was not Binary with only two options:-

1) We want Cameron.
2) We do NOT want Cameron.

A grave misuse of statistics there John Mc Tiddler (Dogging Expert) Tiddler (Dogging Expert). This sort of misuse of statistics is often a common tactic of the educated blinding the uneducated.

I am definately right in this regard because if the people wanted Cameron to be in power, they would have voted for him.... Seeing as 63% of the voting public voted for "someone else"... I can safely conclude that they did NOT want Cameron.

Our debts are not as bad as the rest of Europe!! UK is 60% of GDP, Germany is 77%, France is 79%, Italy is 115%, Spain and Portugal are around 90-100%.... Labour put us in this more favourable position... we can spend another 20% of GDP and still be "OK"... OR... we can chuck the towel in and ruin the infrastructure that Labour have taken 15 years to repair after the last Tory government ran it into the ground....

do you remember 16% interest rates when maggie said it was "good for the country and we had to lump it"?

do you remember the teacher strikes, the train strikes, the riots, poll tax?

do you realise that after a decade of Tory underfunding the railways, schools and the NHS these needed many £Billions to get it back on its feet and we are still paying for it now (and the Tories want to cut funding to education and health again)?

The Tories have and will always be a party for the wealthy. They don't care about "everyone", they only care about lining the pockets of their weathly funders and other rich cronies.

I agree that people want CHANGE, I don't doubt that after 3 terms in office but "blind change" will result in us ending up in a lot more trouble. At least Labour have managed to stabilise the economy (which was casued by the banks worldwide) the BoE is now autonomous.

If the Tories inplement their reform plans, I think we will end up in the same economic mess that Japan is only just emerging from now after the 80's.....

But you carry on... if you wish to vote in a naive inexperienced toff, go for it. Just don't have any regrets.

You need to study the facts of the massive subsidies that are paid to scotland - far more per head than any other part of the uk. This excludes any oil income and payment for that.

Scotland should be made it's own parliament so that they have the right to raise their own taxes (from the scottish population not the rest of us like it is at the moment). The scottish MP's should not be in the English house of parliament in my view but at the very least should not be able to vote on issues that have no impact on them at all.

Dodgy dealings behind the scenes just are a taster if proportional representation comes in - that will be a future of no-one getting the policies that they vote for. Instead the back room dealings and stitch ups will dictate our future - bad idea IMO and will lead to weaker and ineffective goverment.

As for Clegg - we are seeing the true extent of his lack of principles now if he is so interested in personal and party interest and is playing labour and conservatives against each other for that - and NOT the national interest. This will bite him and his party badly.

Just facts and what happened mate.

Wanna revisit history under the previous labour shambles for the purposes of historical accuracy ?

As for debt - i think over 1 trillion pounds of debt is rather a lot and is growing. The amount of interest that we pay on that debt is MORE than is spent on the whole of the health service - that is not good use of our money.

The debt was rising way before the banks screwed stuff up and the economy was already sold off before that too.

Always happens with a labour government and will continue to happen under a new unelected desperate for power labour chimp.

So under the Labour government for the last 3 terms, we haven't grown economically? UKplc have been unsuccessful then?

How would you explain the UK having the least debt out of the European countries?

Just incase you missed the news, the one eyed cyclops has handed his notice in.

So why don't the Cons go ahead and form a minority govenrment then instead of breaking their electoral promises and desparately try to offer Clegg an incentive with voting reform?
