the new rs

Postby hightower » Sat Jan 30, 2010 7:57 pm

test drove the new focus RS yesterday, nice car to drive although perfect dry cold conditions. was pretty quick and comfy.
would consider one in the future just could not bring myself to pay 26k for a ford. quite alot for sale for a car that has a 6 month waitlist.
stirling have one available the now in by far the best colour green but 26k and only lux pack one.
not as fast as the wr1 but good

Well my Focus ST 330BHP (basically an RS without the revo knuckles) was a lot torquier and quicker in a straight line once moving than my WR1 and was a great all rounder i.e. comfy for long journys etc. The mpg was a lot better too not having to move 4wheels. So i can certainly see your plus points with the RS as its almost identical to an ST with a different body kit.

The downside is the lack of of 4WD makes the full power unuseable in the wet unlike the WR1 as you will get ESP flashing or if you disable it wheel spin. The revo knuckle system isnt as good as the hype makes it out to be and in independant tests, a chipped ST and standard RS are even on both road and track unless you get a professional racing driver behind the wheel.

If you are a ford fan or would like to have the RS badge then go for it, great car. If you just like the way it drives and arent worried about the RS badge then get a brand new Focus ST for 17K/18K/19K (depending on trim level ST1/2/3) - note you can normally barter them down on an ST unlike an RS as there are plenty of stock at various dealers..

Once you have it, get it chipped via superchips bluefin or dreamscience and see how it drives to make it very torquey and a good all rounder for a few hundred pounds. If you want more power then for £2,000 to £3,000 you can get a reliable conversion to take it up to 300 to 330bhp still making use of your chipping handset.

My GGR'd Focus ST conversion was about £2,500 i think and was done when the car was 3months old, lasted until we sold it end of last year, 5yrs down the line with no reliability issues as i used it every day for work and we put some serious mileage on the car. If money isnt an issue and you like the car then go for the RS :).

i am thinking of a change but just cant really find anything as good as a wr1, it to be honest is just too good a car. i was speaking to hypertech when i got the car serviced and am thinking about a set of bc coilovers whiteline ARBs and a front strut brace then a re-alignment and camber check.
about 1100 quid but i think it will be money well spent if i decide not to change
i am also looking for a classic impreza ra preferably to strip out and have as a potter project as i have too much spare time on my hands at the moment and am spending too long on the xbox. and not really enough room for another car on the drive so looking to move house (not just for that but it is part of it)

its a tough one mate, if modding your wr1 just remember that it is "dead money" as you never get back much for the mods you put on your car. last time i checked the "book" price from parkers it said:

Original Price £29,995
Franchised Dealer £9,550
Independent Dealer £9,090
Private Good £8,625
Private Poor £7,230
Part Exchange £7,790

The book price can get to fcuk though!

The new RS is nice, my dad has one in white - grip is impressive, even in the wet but it still aint no Subaru. Paint quality is shocking too, although it's probably OCD folks like me that it would concern

:D brilliant. true how many WR1's will go for that kind of cash none!!!

look at the RB320 as well. Evos hold there value unbelievibly too.

This car is a desirable motor so will always hold a higher premium.

yours is a bit ruff though Clark so you may need to just trade it in to get rid!!!

Clark - a lot of the focuses from the standard through to the RS used to suffer from body colour panel mismatch. This was a big issue that went to court with ford and they won in the end over it. But normally you would find the front bumper and rear bumper would be an ever so slightly different colour to the body of the car. Legally you can reject the car because of it as on white ST's it used to be very bad, a bright white body and an almost creamy bumper on some ive seen - mk1 ST's not the new facelift onces... Also the electric orange paint they did the ST in was apparently very thin and suffered from chips far more than any other colour so i think they are using paint a bit sparingly on their cars.

Like Foley says if i had the cash id get one after having four previous ST's but sadly im now poor as the toddler has arrived cutting our income in half.. doh!!

By the way WR1Bro - i hear you used to own a Mk1 RS and secretly you used to love it!

I was made aware of the paint match problems alot of RS customers had encountered before dads was delivered and to be honest the match is pretty good - obviously one of the better ones (done 2 green ones and they were poor). It's actually the Orange Peel levels that all the latest Fords have that really let the cars down :(

My mrk 1 RS was very bad for orange peel,

The mrk 2 RS bumpers get sprayed after the car has been done, Thats why they tend to be slightly different in colour,

BRO I KNOW YOU HATE FOCUS RS's...

They are a nice looking car, my misses' best mate has a green one.

Nice road car/daily driver for sure but there were 2 at bedford last week, 1 which had been tuned.

I was expecting a bit of a battle, but tbh they have to brake very early and whilst they can take 1 corner quickly show them a series and they were in trouble, lots of body roll. Easy pickings for the megane really.

You heard about the future RS from 2011, likely to be a 4x4 hybrid with 300bhp

Electric motors driving the rear wheels and could achieve 40mpg :?
