Listening to Radio 1 this morning laughing to myself about how all the snow is effecting things back home....

I am hoping of few of you lot will be ripping it up and making a mockery of unfortunate idiots stuck in their cars whilst you blast past sideways in true rally 4wd style!!

It has been snowing here for the past 2 weeks with the coldest being last night a -32...everything is working fine, trains on time, all airports open as usual and people going to work just as if nothing is happening.

Me, well I am staying indoors until summer....far too cold to even think about going outside!!

This country isn't prepared for winter!! People go out in all weathers in the same attire and same vehicles and don't really think about their ability to get from A to B.

The scoob handling is superb but I think you still need studs for ice driving... the grip of rubber on ice isn't the best

Nah...even winter compound tyres without studs give pretty decent grip on ice, much better on compacted snow though.

I have been caught out a few times whilst slowly getting used to the extreme temps over here... even simple things.

Local peeps all run a wax stick around the door seals so they can still open them come winter....petrol stations change to a different mix of fuel to prevent it freezing in your tanks and put a small sticker on the pump to let you know it is the winter mix.

Coolant and washer fluid or almost as dangerous as flippin acid when they need to be a pure mix!

DON'T LEAVE YOUR HANDBRAKE ON...can't even count the number of times I have had to drag the rear wheels along in the Clio as the brake pads have frozen solid to the discs!! Leave it in gear and all is good.

Never leave gloves in car when you leave for airport, even if flying to warmer place....you will need to wear the fookers again to scrape the inch thick layer of ice from said car on your return!! Again, how many time have I done this!!

If you do have to go for a pee 'Ray Mears' stylee, then make it a quick one and be sure to shake it all off afterwards.

How much better is Finland prepared, do you think ?

- You dress up with a few more layers and get proper shoes. All of this is available in the UK, you just need to use it.

- Then they give one farmer in every village a big metal shovel to attach to the front of their tractor or pick-up truck and they give the guy 25 quid a day to have a quid drive around the roads and clear them...

5 million people on a country 2.5 times the size of the UK... but in England we don't have enough people to clean the roads !

I don't think it has to do with not enough people, it is more that they haven't invested in the machinery or materials to keep the roads clear. I agree that they could pay a local farmer to go and clear local roads with a snow plough on his tractor or unimog... but that would require some useless lazy 'when is my pensions payable' council knob jockey to arrange payment and communicate with a farmer... tossers

well if we are relying on the council to sort anything out then we are totally and uterlly up shite creek without the canoe never mind the friggin padle,......p.s. I will be terminating my employment with "the council" as of 24th of this month .p.p.s no snow in north wales yet,but will be playing when it does turn up.

My door was frozen shut today after rubbing 3 inch of snow off the whole of the car. Got some warm water from the sink and thought that will do the trick... took the jug back inside, went to open the door - it had re-iced up again. ended up managing to get in one of the back doors, could then grab the de-icer on the passenger seat and then de-ice my way into the car...

Had some fun in the snow to and from harrogate to see the wife in hospital over the past 3 days although why people think they can drive 1 car length behind you when the conditions are like they are and expect to stop is beyond me.

Seen 2 Jags, 3 BMW's and one Mini One abandoned over the last three days which around an inch of slushy icey snow on the roads - anyone else seen any other cars getting stuck??

I took the wife to hospital as it started snowing on Thursday lunchtime in the Mondeo as its the only car she is comfy in at the moment. I came out at 10:30pm and there was a good amount of snow about. The mondeo got me all the way home but I made the silly mistake 50 yards from home of turning up a little shortcut road which had a slight incline on it. ESP lights flashing, wheels start spinning and the car barely creeps up the small shallow slope to get home. In comparison in the snow the subaru feels incredibly planted in the snow and very safe to drive compared to the FWD cars. Although we all have to be aware that whilst we have more chance of putting power down, it doesnt mean we have a better chance of stopping.

Drove to newcastle and back yesterday in my scoob - 500 miles round trip. No problem.

Shame they hadn't even gritted the main A1 - its not as though we didnt have any notice at all of the snow coming ...

Councils have no money for gritters/gritting/salt - new labia has squandered it all.

There's loads up here, was out for a meal last night & the snow really hindered me on the way home it ment i had to slow down i could only do 70 not my usual 80mph cruise
The amount of cars all crawling along in big ques doing 30mph in the inside lane of the duel carriageway then me bombing past at 70 in the outside lane where there were no other car tracks

As for all you ones that park/garage their scoobs for winter stop being pussys & get out & have some fun in the snow

" So ??? That's not forbidden."

"No, but it is very slippery. We could not keep up with you."

"True, that's because you don't have proper tyres".

Next I had two coppers going " Wow ! Show us ! Never seen any of these !"

The funny thing was that they were two women cops

in almost every other euro country that surrounds UK, it is compulsory to have winter tyres on when it goes below 5 degrees or so..

Up here then it starts from 1st Dec and last right through to Easter roughly...

you really don't know just how much difference they can make until you have tried them, even on a 2wd car.

wouls agree with that, in the good old days when i used to run my sprint/rally spec Nova sport on the road all year i used t bolt a set of snow tyres on the front that most peeps laughed at, but was highly amuzing how much water they could clear when they were aquaplaning!!

travelled back from Donnington one year mid 90's when it was used as a stage on the RAC-Network Q (Rally GB these days) in blizzsard conditions - nearly 6hrs to do a journey that takes what 2.5 normally!!

no-one was using the outside lane apart from the odd pukka4x4 so i was simply waiting for them to clear a bit of a track and then following to the looks of amazement as we passed a lot of stuck/stationary traffic - an odd one would think thats a good idea, pull out, slide around for a couple of mins and then give-up to sit and ponder how this little car had just rattled down the road!!

Grrrrrr - 2 and a half hours to get home last night, 30 miles, was a pain to say the least

But first into the work carpark this morning, with its fresh covering of snow, was fun
