Hiring an airfield for a day

Postby John Mc » Tue Jun 16, 2009 1:39 pm

To test drive cars... in a top gear style...

Anyone know how much this would cost?

Anyone know someone with one for hire for a day (or in their back garden?)

Spooky, I have thought about the same recently. All because of the Worcester guys video.

Get some prices John Mc Tiddler (Dogging Expert) Tiddler (Dogging Expert) and the WR1oc could look at helping with financing it.

I did have one I could use here, but the RAF have suspended use of it now due to radiation risk or something.

Yes as per the PM we need to test these roll bars properly and safely as we have both had close shaves recently...

i think if we do hire an airfield that we will need someone to organise the event as the sound of 20/30 scoobs going mental on an airfield at the same time could cause problems...

That link I posted in Scotland organises the event for you in terms of liability insurances etc but you can still do what you want on the track as long as it's safe.... I don't think anyone would want to trash into someone else so if people want to do mad drifting or donuts then we can have an hour in a separate area where people can do that till their tyres burst!!

I think most disused airfields have noise restrictions in place if close to residential areas... need one in the middle of nowhere!!

Been to Crail a few times to watch the 1/4 mile. Its a pretty run down place, an old WW2 air base & i think WW2 was the last time any money was spent on the place! Its Scotlands only 1/4m strip & must be the roughest 1/4 in the UK.

They do have rally events there like the kingdom stages.

Its always packed on 1/4m days with wee neds drinking buckfast & wearing trackies :?

Why the fcuk would anyone want to hire an airfield? You got a fcuking Boeing 757 tucked away in your garage ?? :?

Driving on an airfield ranks right up there with going to Brunthingthorpe and watching paint dry.

Just close off a forest track so you can really enjoy the handling of your car.

I have always thought it would be great to have a nice open expanse of a runway to find out how your car really handles and get to know where the limit is without also finding out how well the airbags respond too 8)

When I've sorted out the replacement for the M5 in the next few months, you can count me in

For an event on an airfield I can always arrange for you to have an ARDS Licensed Race Instructor on hand for the day to make sure you all get the best out of the day..........

I've said before I am happy to help arrange track days and from next year when Tom can upgrade his instructors licence to the next level we can look at organising track days with private tuition on hand if people are interested.

im definately interested in instruction from a pro instead of blindly testing the cars limits and what i think is a good driving line etc... :)

as for runways being boring Swede.. myself and john have just had anti roll bars and strut braces fitted to our cars and our finding that they can let go and react completely differently to normal... thus we want to test in a safe environment where it doesnt matter if we donut or overcook it.... car is lovely and flat on cornering now though compared to the rolly default setup :)

......for Worcester, now read 'JPOC' but yeh, that is a good introduction.

NOW, we're moving on to a whole day at Kemble Nr Cirencester, Glos.
It's costing us 50 notes for a whole day's action. There's 10 places left I think

http://www.jpoc.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=3813

I think this gives a bit more info BUT look up Kemble on Google. Ring them directly for costings etc. I'm not personally involved with the organisation of this so can't tell you more.

See ya... go and play with Swede on your own.

Seriously though, Swede's plan was far more expensive. I know he would have planned everything to the thenth degree and it would have been a spectacular event but we don't all have Swede's income.

Back to the airfield. If someone finds a suitable event Dan and myself will do what we can to make it happen.
