Drove Mega's ST today

Postby John Mc » Sat May 16, 2009 5:31 pm

Went for a blast around some of the finest driving roads in Yorkshire today with Mega in his ST using both the standard map and the 330bhp map (500Nm  )

Pulls like a train in every gear, was a bit damp and was difficult to get the power down in 3rd or below as it kept wheelspinning  It has so much torque low down with the boost starting lower with the remap that you can pull in 3rd up a hill from 1500rpm... I think it would definately beat a standard WR1....

until you get to a corner...

Everytime you back off the throttle it cracked a flame out the exhausts which sounded like a mini bomb going off inside the car, sounded awsome.

If this had 4wd it would be perfect but I wouldn't go into corners like I would in the WR1.

Fully expect to be banned after this post  Sorry Bro.

Seriously, 330bhp... 500Nm...

Standard Focus - WR1 would win no doubt.

John my last car was a focus RS running 330bhp and use to piss over modded ST'S, Plus the rs could conner as if it was on railes and use to piss all over evo's  Av got rs's running though my blood so if you want to drive a fast ford drive a modded RS :D

The focus st is a good cruiser but defo not for the track,

Now I'm confused... I didn't mention RS's

Are you saying that a tuned Focus ST (330bhp) is faster or slower than a standard WR1?

I would say that the Focus was faster in a straight line.

I would say that the WR1 is better through bends.

Mega drove the ST quickly first to show me what it was like before I drove it... Even he said that he had to back off and slow down before the corner.. when I got in, I had to agree that I felt more confident in the WR1, putting the power on early in bends and also travelling through quicker.

All the same. None of them can match the M5.

ROFL - nice to see your thoughts on the car John...

As ive always said in a straight line it is quicker than my WR1 - the wifes proved it by overtaking me on a bypass whilst both flatout... Country roads though youd tame the focus down to 270bhp to reliably get the power down without the torque steer in the wet... still for cornering and putting power down in the wet and dry the WR1 wins hands down in my book thats why the wifes relegated to the ST ;).

As for Foley and the the Focus RS... I had a play with a Graham Goode Racing converted Focus RS which was running around 300BHP. I could keep up with it and slightly edge up to it when my ST was only up to 305BHP on the bypass... but on corners the RS used to leave the ST for dust due to its fancy diff. The RS is also a lot harsher than the ST and as such is built to corner compared to the ST which gets a bit rolly.

Both the ST and RS are good cars and do what they were designed to do for their target audiences. Neither feel anything like a scooby though so for those that havent driven them its hard to explain. :)

He had the old model though.

The question is how the new one is. Having driven the ST and really having enjoyed it, it would not surprise me the RS must be really good.

I'm don't agree entirely that an ST can't match a WR1: those who were at the 2007 Xmas do will remember the orange ST I had that weekend. It was pissing down but still lost every scoob on the back roads around Warwick

Dude a standard ST is noticeably slower than the WR1, however a remap for £500ish doubles the turbo boost giving it loads more torque all around and can take a standard car from 220bhp up to 270bhp. If you do a few other minor mods like intercooler/induction/exhaust the car turns into a torque machine as John noticed yesterday and even worse a WR1 beater.

Well, I sure didn't notice at all that the ST was slower than the horde of Impreza's

As said, I really liked it, even in its standard form Mr.Hertz gave it to me.

PMSL... But with £500 you can modify any car.

How does the drivetrain handle the incoherent ramping of boost? Oooh la la, it works in a straight line on a very dry day. Otherwise, it is a heap of dull Hocus Pocus Focus Smocus shit that tootles to the supermarket to pick up a 4 pack of Tesco's own lager.

You can mod a Micra to out drag a super car... but you still look like a cock behind the wheel.

Clearly John Mc Tiddler (Dogging Expert) Tiddler (Dogging Expert) is easily pleased? I enjoyed my Focus for the first three days as it was something different. After that it was nothing more than a FOCUS dull dull dull. No passion, no sole and no personality.

Actually, for once I need to disagree with you (on a serious note for once)that a Focus ST would be dull.

The last Focus with its 5 cilinder first of all really sounds brilliant. If you open that exhaust even more up, it will give a scoob witha loud exhaust a run for its money (on sound).

When you drive it, I found that you can feel very much at one with the car and place it exactly where you want it at any speed.

It is obviously true that the lack of 4WD hampers traction in general.

On wet roads, you just compensate when you know the nose will go wide by going into the corner adequately (i.e. turning in early and forcing the car to understeer). When accelerating, you just allow a bit of wheelspin and you search for grip.
You can't just plant your foot down of course and on that same wet road, a scoob or Evo will indeed go much faster as you won't waste any power. But progress will in no way be slow.

I think it's one of these cars that is slower against the clock than some more expensive material, but it can beat them for simple driving pleasure. I'd rather drive an ST on a normal road than a DB9 or an M5 for instance. (which are, I admit, not really the most entertaining cars in their category)

Fook me, how can you compare and contrast a Focus to a M5 or Aston? One driver succeeded in life and the other one is more prone to w@nking "badly" watching trains go past.

If you think that the DB9 buyer and Focus buyer bought the best they can afford, you're right about their professional succes.

But I tend to not really be interested in the driver, unless she's a 25 year old stunner ;)

Swede are you really bumming up a ford with a bloody volvo engine ? You get better every time you post man.

As bro rightly say's us M5 and Aston drivers really dont give a toss at the end of the day, and no matter how you chop and change your views the M5 is still a masterpiece and is still over 70 grand and is maybe outwith your reach financially which may lead you back to some sort of primival jealousy I dont know but its still one of the best car's on the road today.
