Often have this discussion with friends, thought I would pose the question on here, especially in light of the car that's just been sold to a dealer, ( although didn't admit to being a dealer when asked ), then advertised with at least 2K mark up.
So, why buy from a dealer, do you feel safer, is it because of a warranty, possibly a P/X involved, finance, etc etc.

knew he was a dealer , but when asked he denied was for stock.
so he was up front about been a dealer.
personally i buy from where is right car at right price.
just bought my latest car from a dealer, but only because unusually price was very fair/low.
but out of last 10/15 cars or so have bought all but 2 privately.

think most of what you have said applies, most people cannot afford to sell their car later so need to part ex, plus some people need finance or feel safer with some comeback
