More than likely. Could be "something" else but you'd need to get it checked out to confirm.

Please introduce yourself in the New-comers section.

There is a repair thread on the NASIOC forum where the guy re-greases them himself...but to my knowledge nobody here has tried that yet...and to be honest not sure if that is the problem with them anyways.

Would be interesting to try keep hold of the knackered shocks to take apart afterwards to try this theory out.

i believe regreasing the struts is only a temporary fix that only lasts a certain amount of time.
to check your struts, jack the car up til the wheel is off the ground.if you can freely move the wheel up and down by hand its most likely the shock.you'll probably be able to hear it clunking too if it does.
could also be the top mount, they have a washer spot welded into the mount that can break loose or wear out which makes the strut move about in the mount.
if it turns out you need new shocks try as performance or buypartsby.co.uk,they will supply them at a fraction of the main dealers.......about a third of the price iirc

Aye that was me that put it up in the Scottish section, it's a copy of the link Caveman originally put up on here.

Wanted to see if anyone would try it & report on it  as mine are starting to go again.

Kim mine makes the same noise as you describe on yours, it is the rear shocks going this is the 2nd set it's happened to on mine.

bite the bullet and go coilovers...saves a lot of hassle in the long run I guess.

Want somebody to try the re-packing though, curious to know if it works or not!

If you go coilovers, then try re-packing the knackered ones and see.

Lol that was my intension of posting the link on sidc to see if someone else would have a go & see if it works before thinking about doing my own

Think coilovers are probably to much for the roads up here they're very lumpy, bumpy & full of potholes. Think my teeth & spine would be rattled to bits with coilovers as it can be pretty crashy on the standard set up.

they don't have to be set up super stiff...they will probably offer a better ride but with the added bonus of you setting them up to your own preference.

Exe-TC comes with softer springs. Much better on bumpy roads. Its all in the damping which has 40 adjustments alone.

The previous owner of mine replaced the shocks through the warranty. Is this something that's likely to need doing again then at some point? Or would the replacements not have this problem?

What exactly IS the problem with them - what makes them start knocking etc?

There was a thread on S/net stating the angle of the shock is the problem... :? iirc

So we are likely going to have to keep replacing the suspension? Mine were done with under 25k miles...

try jacking it up and squirting some WD40 on the exposed shaft.
Drop it down and repeat operation...

Will fix the problem for 6 months !

You won't regret getting EXE-TC coilovers.

I've had brand new standard WR1 stocks put on my rear through warranty. But if I do keep my 1, I tempted to get coilovers. Would anyone be interested in buying my rear stocks? Only done about 1,000 miles since replaced a few months ago.

I had mine replaced about 6 months ago. The Subaru "Test" was to push down on the rear quarter and listen for a knocking noise... which it did. One side was slightly more noisier than the other but I didn't want to replace just one side...

Not sure how scientific it was but seemed to be the problem as when they were both replaced, haven't had the knocking since. £640 I think to repair both including VAT, fitting, tea break etc.

Clicking is almost certainly the slack in the diff(s)... I had mine up on the ramps (twice) at Subaru and again at Adams in Buxton and each time they proved it was the diffs and not the wheel hub nuts making the clicking noise...

Mine cost £722 to replace, but Subaru extended warranty paid for it :D
